: Grave concerns have been raised about the limitations that inadequate menstrual hygiene management (MHM) imposes on girls, especially in developing countries. This study follows up on the previous work on the subject done in Jalingo, Nigeria by Nnennaya et al , but specifically on menstruation-associated school absenteeism and its impact on academic output. Data extraction was done on the responses generated by Nnennaya et al ; re-adapted for variables reflective of school absenteeism; subjected to content and comparative analyses; and extrapolated to quantify school absenteeism and its impact on academic output. Appropriate remedial interventions were deduced. Menstruation-associated absenteeism led to a loss of 20% of active school-days and 13.06% decline in school-based productivity. Excuses from class to attend to MHM needs resulted to a loss of 12.5% of active class-hours/day, a loss of 3 man-hours/month, and a decline of 0.86% in school-based productivity. Menstruation-associated absenteeism imposed on girls a disadvantage in academic performance of 2.9 – 5.5% compared to boys. These losses combined with other social pressures of MHM to nudge many girls to drop out of school. Menstruation-associated school absenteeism among adolescent school girls in Jalingo was high, affected their academic performance adversely and predisposed the girls towards school drop-out. Sustainable remedies in such high resource-constrained setting include: extensive enlightenment, counseling and demonstration sessions on MHM; promoting universal access to free reusable sanitary pads; and provision of affordable OB14-CLCA type latrines in schools.

: The usage of motorbikes for commercial transportation has become increasingly popular, particularly when there are traffic jams in Nigeria. However, the number of injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents is rising, and there is insufficient data on how much commercial motorcyclists abide by traffic laws and regulations. This study, therefore, assessed the knowledge of road use regulations and compliance among commercial motorcycle riders in Oluyole Local Government Area (OLGA), Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was conducted 300 randomly selected commercial motorcyclists in OLGA. A validated semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect information. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square at p=0.05. Respondents’ mean age was 31.9±7.0 years, 66.0% were married while 54% had a valid riding license. Sixty-eight percent of the participants stated that 50 km/hour is the speed limit for commercial motorcycle while 77.7% reported that the dotted white line on the road indicating a rider can overtake. The mean knowledge score was 7.8±1.8, 86.0% had good knowledge on road use rules and regulation. Most (99.7%) of the participants revealed that they always mindful of following road use rules while 37.0% said they always use helmet whenever they want to carry passengers. The mean level of compliance to road use rules and regulation was 6.3±0.6, only 31% were in full compliance with the road use rules and regulation. Significantly, commercial motorcycle riders who possess a valid drivers’ license (36.6%) had full compliance to road use regulations compared to those without valid drivers’ license (25.2%). Commercial motorcycle riders had good knowledge of traffic rules and regulations but full compliance was low. Compliance to road use rules and regulations should be enforced.

: Despite public health efforts to reduce the health burden of cigarettes by encouraging smoking cessation, a proportion of smokers remain unwilling to quit. A shift from smoking cessation to tobacco harm reduction, based on smokers switching completely to potentially less harmful products such as electronic cigarettes (ECs), has been proposed as an alternative strategy. This is a single-centre, cross-sectional confinement study, involving healthy exclusive Vuse EC users and current, former, or never-smokers. Exclusive EC use and smoking status will be confirmed by urinary cotinine and exhaled carbon monoxide levels. Participants will be confined for 24 hours, during which they will use their usual product (EC or cigarette) as normal. Biomarkers of exposure and potential harm will be analysed in 24-hour urine and blood and compliance will be measured using N-(2-cyanoethyl)valine. The primary objective is to quantitatively assess differences between EC users and current smokers in urinary total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol and 8-epi-prostaglandin F 2α Type III, exhaled nitric oxide, and carboxyhaemoglobin, white blood cell count, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and high-density lipoprotein. Secondary objectives are to quantitatively assess differences between EC users and current smokers in selected urinary biomarkers of tobacco exposure, 11-dehydrothromboxane B2, forced expiratory volume in 1 second as a percentage of predicted, carotid intima-media thickness and a quality of life questionnaire. Endpoints will also be compared between EC users and former and never-smokers. The results of this study are anticipated to add to the current knowledge about the role of ECs in tobacco harm reduction.
