Objective: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease with high prevalence in both children and adults. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have revealed that genetic factors play an important role in caries incidence. However, existing methods are not sufficient to identify caries-associated genes, due to the complex correlation structure of caries GWAS data, and lack of appropriate summarization at the gene level. This paper attempts to address that by analyzing data from the Gene, Environment Association Studies (GENEVA) consortium.

Methods: We investigated gene-based genetic associations for dental caries based on genome-wide data derived from the GENEVA database, with adjustment to covariates, linkage disequilibrium among single-nucleotide polymorphisms, and family relations, in sampled individuals.

Results: Several suggestive genes were identified, in which some of them have been previously found to have potential biological functions on cariogenesis.

Conclusions: By comparing the gene sets identified from gene-based and SNP-based association testing methods, we found a non-negligible overlap, which indicates that our gene-based analysis can provide substantial supplement to the traditional GWAS analysis.

Cranioplasty is defined as the surgical repair of acquired defects or congenital deformities of the cranium. It is performed mainly for anatomical reconstruction, brain protection, and cosmetics, but evidence has shown that there is also improvement of brain physiology. The aims of this paper are to describe a technique to fabricate polymethylmethacrylate prostheses by hand during operation and at the same time describe the surgical outcomes of this procedure. Between the years 2007 and 2011, 20 patients were complaining from cranial bone defect due to many causes underwent cranioplasty operation in Mosul Medical Center/IRAQ for reconstructed the defect using the polymethylmethacrylate that fabricated by hand during the operation. The operations were done by the same maxillofacial surgeon with different neurosurgeons. Age of patients extended from 14 years to 42 years with mean 33.2 years. The main cause of cranial defect was trauma resulting from missiles injuries that involved 14 patients and formed 70%. During the follow-up, all patients were satisfied with the cosmetic result and no revision for cosmetic reasons was required. One patient developed infection in one of stainless steel wire postoperatively that controlled and resolved the problem by remove this wire only. Thus, the implanted material was well tolerated in all cases. The majority of patients were males while the most common cause of cranial defect was due to traumatic cranial injury by missiles injuries. Infection, being the most feared complication of allograft implants, but there was a very low rate with the technique described in this paper. This technique is quick and easy to perform, and provide a cheap and safe way produces a strong implant very good cosmetic. *Corresponding author: Israa Anwar Abd al-Hameed, BDS, MSc Dentistry College Mosul University Mosul, Iraq E-mail: amertaqa@hotmail.com Citation: Abd al-Hameed IA, Mahmood AS, Taka YA. Israa Anwar Abd AL-Hameed1*Ali Salim Mahmood2 Yasir Adil Taka3

Introduction: Craniosynostosis is a condition in which one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant skull prematurely fuses by turning into bone. Aim: Evaluate the clinical manifestations of craniosynostosis, imaging and surgical treatment with their complications. Materials and Methods: The study comprised twenty one patients complaining from craniofacial deformity. The patients evaluated by recording the medical history, clinical examination and diagnosed by imaging that included a plain X-ray and computed tomography. The goal of surgery is to open the fused sutures, reshape the head and allow for normal brain and skull growth. According to the type of material that used to fixate the cranial bones, the patients divided into 3 groups, Group A: Titanium plate and stainless steel wire; Group B: Stainless wire; Group C: Absorbable suture. Results: The clinical examination showed cranial bones deformity in all patients while 4 patients involved by papilloedema. The plain X-ray for the skull diagnosed 4 cases by showed beaten copper appearance, while the computed tomography gave excellent evaluation for all cases. The nonsyndromic craniosynostosis formed (90.4%) and coronal suture involvement formed (61.9%). The follow-up showed that the group C had more cosmetic improvement and more comfortable than group A and B, and there were 4 patients in group A and 2 patients in group B complained from extracranial prominent of plates and wire. Discussion: The advantages of absorbable suture included lower costs, speed of application, and absence of translocation. Conclusion: The most clinical manifestations were cranial deformity while visual deterioration was often late manifestations. The computed tomography scan represents the gold standard evaluation for craniosynostosis. The use absorbable suture in bone fixation showed more cosmetic improvement and more comfortable to the patients with low complication rate. *Corresponding author: Israa Anwar Abd al-Hameed, BDS, MSc Department of Periodontology, School Dentistry College, Mosul University Mosul, Iraq E-mail: amertaqa@hotmail.com Citation: Abd al-Hameed IA, Taha YA, Mahmood AS. Roth aeria, Rothia dentocariosa, and Rothia mucilaginosa are isolated from the human oral cavity. Among them, R. aeria can cause severe systemic infection diseases (e.g., bronchitis, endocarditis, pneumonia, and sepsis). However, the veritable prevalence of this organism in the human oral cavity has not ever been known. Thus, the selective medium for the isolation and quantification of R. aeria is necessary to assess the prevalence of this organism, and to diagnose various R. aeria infection diseases. To investigate R. aeria distribution in oral cavities, a novel selective medium (RAESM) was developed for isolating and quantifying R. aeria. RAESM consists of sodium gluconate, tryptone, meat extract, sodium fluoride, acriflavin neutral, fosfomycin, lincomycin, colistin, aztreonam, and agar. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed based on partial sequences of the 16S rDNA genes of R. aeria. The percentage of R. aeria in saliva samples collected from 20 subjects was examined. Moreover, we examined the antibiotic susceptibility of thirty isolates from six subjects. The average growth recovery of R. aeria on RAESM was 96.6% compared with that on Brain Heart Infusion supplemented with Yeast Extract (BHI-Y) agar. Growth of other representative oral bacteria, including other Rothia species, was remarkably inhibited on the selective medium. The PCR primers reacted to R. aeria and did not react to other Rothia species or representative oral bacteria. R. aeria was detected as 1.0% of the total bacteria, 5.9×107CFU/ml, on BHI-Y agar in the oral cavities of all subjects. R. aeria isolates obtained in this study were susceptible to most antibiotics; however R. aeria isolates from one subject were highly resistant to erythromycin, lincomycin, and clindamycin. R. aeria may be a part of the normal flora in the human oral cavities. A novel selective medium, RAESM, was useful for isolating R. aeria. Moreover, it was indicated that RAESM was useful for diagnosing R. aeria infections.

Indirect bonding (IDB) has been in orthodontic practice for more than 35 years. But still, most of the clinicians use direct bonding procedures. The main reason for this may be technique sensitivity and requirement of extra laboratory procedures, increasing the cost of the treatment. Many researchers have tried their methods to describe the indirect bonding procedures so that it can reduce the chair side time required for complete appliance placement with more precise bracket positioning. Moreover, the IDB procedures provide more patient comfort. Many techniques have been described in the article to simplify the IDB procedures. *Corresponding author: Dr. Aggarwal P, DB.D.S., M.D.S. Pancham Aggarwal1*Rajni Aggarwal2
