. This article was commissioned as a tribute to Jean Bourgain and describes his early work in geometric functional analysis. It also includes a brief account of how these areas have developed in the three decades since Jean worked in them, much of their development influenced by his ideas.

Classification of rational angles in plane lattices 平面格中有理角的分类

This paper is concerned with configurations of points in a plane lattice which determine angles that are rational multiples of π pi . We shall study how many such angles may appear in a given lattice and in which positions, allowing the lattice to vary arbitrarily.This classification turns out to be much less simple than could be expected, leading even to parametrizations involving rational points on certain algebraic curves of positive genus.

Convex integration constructions in hydrodynamics 流体力学中的凸积分结构

We review recent developments in the field of mathematical fluid dynamics which utilize techniques that go under the umbrella name convex integration. In the hydrodynamical context, these methods produce paradoxical solutions to the fluid equations which defy physical laws. These counterintuitive solutions have a number of properties that resemble predictions made by phenomenological theories of fluid turbulence. The goal of this review is to highlight some of these similarities while maintaining an emphasis on rigorous mathematical statements. We focus our attention on the construction of weak solutions for the incompressible Euler, Navier-Stokes, and magneto-hydrodynamic equations which violate these systems’ physical energy laws.

Exploring the toolkit of Jean Bourgain 探索Jean Bourgain的工具包

Gian-Carlo Rota once asserted that "every mathematician only has a few tricks". The sheer breadth and ingenuity in the work of Jean Bourgain may at first glance appear to be a counterexample to this maxim. However, as we hope to illustrate in this article, even Bourgain relied frequently on a core set of tools, which formed the base from which problems in many disparate mathematical fields could then be attacked. We discuss a selected number of these tools here, and then perform a case study of how an argument in one of Bourgain's papers can be interpreted as a sequential application of several of these tools.
