Fast neutron spectra at the surface of spherical shells of natural uranium 天然铀球壳表面的快中子谱

Energy spectra have been measured by the time of flight method, of fast neutrons leaking from the surface of spherical shells of natural uranium. Source neutrons were generated at the centre of the shells by electron bombardment of spherical natural uranium and also lead targets. New measurements have been made of the neutron spectra generated by these targets in order to specify the source to be used in Sn transport theory calculations. Shell thicknesses of 9·9 cm and 3·0 cm were used; spectra were measured at 22° and 45° to the shell surface normal and covered the energy range 10 keV–6 MeV. The measurements were compared with Sn theory predictions; the results of an automatic data adjustment which made use of the measurements are also presented.

Deepwater siting of floating nuclear power plants 浮动核电站的深水选址

Depth restriction, cost, and environmental impact of large fixed breakwaters are a major restriction on the applicability of floating nuclear power stations. Deepwater versions without breakwater were found to be technically feasible by a university-industry study team if technology developed for offshore oil production is applied. Barges and mooring systems capable of withstanding maximum Pacific Coast sea conditions seemed feasible, and the expected barge motions and accelerations were found to be within the range for which even land-based plants are designed. Safety from ship collision was achieved by a new concept which intercepts and halts an approaching ship without damage or spillage of its cargo. Important legal, safety, and environmental considerations in siting offshore power stations were studied.

An analysis of the 1957 windscale accident using the WEERIE code 使用WEERIE代码对1957年windscale事故进行分析

The reactor safety analysis code WEERIE has been used to study the radiological consequences of the fire which affected a substantial fraction of the core at Windscale No. 1 pile in October 1957. From the information published in the open literature it has been possible to simulate the fuel conditions at the time of the incident with WEERIE and to calculate the subsequent releases of radioactive nuclides into the atmosphere. Meteorological dispersion has been estimated from the conditions prevailing at the time of the accident and WEERIE has been used to predict the dosimetric consequences, the ground deposition and the external exposure to be associated with the release of a wide range of nuclides. Extremely good agreement has been found between the WEERIE analysis and the measurements made on a limited selection of nuclides after the incident. WEERIE additionally provides information about several other interesting facets of the Windscale release. Overall the comparison with WEERIE lends confidence to the program methodology and data sources, thus giving increased credibility to the results obtained from the program in its application to existing and proposed commercial nuclear power stations.
