Report finds students with disabilities lack access to college prep courses
Pub Date : 2024-11-14 DOI: 10.1002/dhe.31864
Eric Lyerly Esq.

A new report (https://bit.ly/4epIrCC) by the Center for Learner Equity sheds light on the experiences of high school students with disabilities in both traditional public schools and public charter schools, raising important questions about equity and access. The CLE notes that for the last few decades, the goals of the U.S. education system have focused on preparing students for postsecondary opportunities and building “college and career-ready skills.” It suggests that this focus is reflected in the Individuals with Disabilities Act, which states the “purpose of education is both to meet students’ unique needs and ‘prepare them for further education, employment, and independent living.’”

Service animal law and etiquette: How to treat service dogs on campus
Pub Date : 2024-11-14 DOI: 10.1002/dhe.31861
Eric Lyerly Esq.

Service dogs have become a common sight on and off campus. For dog lovers and non-dog lovers alike, these animals evoke respect for their training, obedience, and commitment to assisting their owners. For the former (myself included), it can be hard to see such a good boy or girl and not want to pet or interact with them.

New study finds heightened mortality risks for disabled individuals
Pub Date : 2024-11-14 DOI: 10.1002/dhe.31867
Eric Lyerly Esq.

A new study by Scott Landes, Associate Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University, has shown that disabled adults in the United States face nearly twice the mortality risk compared to nondisabled adults. Published in the journal Health Affairs (bit.ly/3Ay7qFZ), this research claims to be the first comprehensive study to document the health disparity in mortality rates across various disability categories and demographic groups, filling a knowledge gap on health care issues affecting disabled people. The research comes nearly a year after the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities designated individuals with disabilities as a population with health disparities.

(National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities)将残疾人指定为健康差异人群近一年后进行的。

Help your students transition to the world of work 帮助学生向职场过渡
Pub Date : 2024-10-15 DOI: 10.1002/dhe.31845
Elizabeth C. Hamblet

With everything disability services offices must do, helping with students’ job transitions may seem like one more responsibility you may not wish to take on. But connecting with career services can not only benefit students in their pursuit of a job after graduation, but also during their time at college. I spoke to Amanda Feaster of Kent State, Christy Oslund of Michigan Technological University, Joan Rachmel of Nevada State, and Gabe Wright of the University of Tampa about this process.
