The coupling of electromagnetic fields through CATV drop cables can be measured using the radiometer described in this paper. The theoretical analysis of this coupling, which began in 1934, is reviewed and the measurements agree with the predictions. Accordingly engineers can theoretically analyze and design coaxial cables. The measurements show that the different types of drop cables in use result in a large variation in coupling. The flexure measurements show that some cables would be expected to have 10 times longer flexure life than other types.

A method of determining and comparing reach of broadband CATV systems using hybrid IC amplifiers is outlined. System design theory is given, and subsequent performance data projected and compared for systems operating at upper limit frequencies of 300, 320, 350 and 400 MHz, and carrying 35, 38, 43 and 51 television channels, respectively. Trunk station performance is expressed in terms of hybrid amplifier specifications and performance degradation factors. General design equations are presented, and from these, relative performance of a broad range of trunk spacings and channel loading conditions are determined. Specific spacings, cascades and reach for 350 and 400 MHz systems are suggested.

The conventional methods of troubleshooting CATV trunk plant and monitoring system levels have to date been less than optimum; requiring a considerable amount of field testing and dependence on subscriber trouble reports. The need therefore exists for an automated status monitoring system on a large CATV system to readily pinpoint fault conditions and maintain a continuous and accurate record of transmission performance.

Signal switching has been practiced in CATV headends as a means of achieving better utilization of a limited number of channels and for commercial deletion and non duplication substitution. In designing a headend switching system, several problems need to be addressed. A selection can be made between baseband and IF switching, each having advantages under certain conditions. Different types of hardware are available to implement switching operations, including mechanical switches and relays, and electronic switches. When multiple inputs or output are involved in a switching operation, differing methods may be employed to implement signal distribution, with the method selected affecting isolation, loss, and complexity.
