The design of programs to search large document data bases is discussed with regard to the use of compression coding combined with adoption of word fragments as the basic language elements. An algorithm is described for determination of a set of almost equifrequent fragments. Its efficiency is tested for a sample data base formed from the MARC tapes. A certain threshold frequency acts as a parameter whose value determines the number of distinct fragments. The selection algorithm is designed to give some preference to choice of the longest fragments and hence allow compact coding of the data base by concatenation of non-overlapping fragments.

When information facilities in Israel had reached some level of sufficiency a committee was appointed to review existing services and submit proposals for their future development. The committee's report was issued in 1970 and like similar reports prepared elsewhere it contained a broad outline of the objectives which information services in Israel should strive at. Present planning aims to break down these objectives into a detailed list of activities, setting forth priorities, costs, manpower, physical facilities, organizational and managerial decisions, etc. This paper describes initial detailed planning activities and some conclusions which have already been arrived at.

This paper compares two types of cycling strategies possible in citation index searching. This is done using a class of pseudo-randomly generated citation digraphs whose elements have bounded bibliography size. An attempt is made to explain the results obtained using a combinatorial formula of general application to digraphs.

Claude Ainsley Mackenzie
An investigation has been made of the suitability of Farradane's system of relational indexing as a German language indexing tool. A circular representation of Farradane's table of relations is proposed and the German version of relational indexing is presented and discussed. The method has been found effective in German, and it would appear that the semantic interpretation of texts is independent of the linguistic influences of the language.
