An exact solution of the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid past an infinite vertical plate uniformly accelerated in the vertical direction is presented. The presence of foreign mass is also taken into account. It is observed that the skin-friction increases with increasing Sc (Schmidt number) but decreases with increasing N (buoyancy parameter) or G (Grashof number).

Addition of steam to combustion air in thermal regenerator, though considerably increases their thermal ratios also lowers the matrix surface temperatures. Recirculation of a part of combustion air is proposed to control the matrix temperature in regenerators employing steam injection. It has been predicted that with 20% recirculation the minimum matrix temperature is increased by about 50°C. Though there is a little drop in the regenerator thermal ratios, which are already substantially increased by steam injection.

The mass transfer due to the dispersion of discrete particles in turbulent flows is modelled through the so-called non-discrete dispersive approach (N D D A). A computer program has been built corresponding to the above modelling and is here applied to the case of the behaviour of a cloud of water droplets released on the axis of a fully developed turbulent pipe flow.

Initial results are presented for double-segmentally baffled shell-and-tube heat exchangers, with leakage. The results are compared with those for a single-segmentally baffled exchanger of similar geometry, and shown to be similar to that of two such exchangers in a back-to-back parallel configuration.

Several recent experiments demonstrated the enhancement of turbulent heat transfer with evaporation as compared with that of a dry body. The present study was an attempt to obtain more accurate data on the heat and mass transfer coefficients with water evaporation. In addition, a method of error evaluation was developed and applied to correct the experimental errors in the recently reported results. Most of the corrected values and the present experimental data revealed that the heat transfer coefficient with evaporation agreed with that of the dry body without evaporation within experimental error.

Unsteady two-dimensional hydromagnetic free convective flow through a porous medium bounded by a vertical infinite plate is considered. Expressions for the velocity and temperature field are obtained. The influence of the various parameters entering into the problem on the velocity field are discussed.
