A simple, cheap and practical method of producing photographic amplitude gratings with black to white ratio differing from unity is described. A 50% amplitude grating is illuminated by a light source of defined extent. The light intensity distribution at a certain distance behind this grating is recorded on high contrast photographic emulsion. The black to white ratio changes with illumination time. Based on the same principle, the grating frequency can be doubled without grating size reduction.

An outline of the results of micro-machining by coherent light by a method called ‘conjugation of pupils’ is given. The manufacture of micro-holes and the extension of the method to engraving on thin films and to micro-welding is described.

Some of the processes which control the perfection of crystals pulled from a melt are outlined, and a set of rules is given for the growth of strain-free homogeneous crystals.
概述了从熔体中拉出完美晶体的一些控制过程,并给出了一套无应变均匀晶体生长的规则。

This article surveys the research and development in optics being carried out at RPI. It covers optical design, the design of complete lens systems, fibre optics, and new methods of manufacture and optical testing. ‘Optical developments at RPI’, was the subject of an Optical Group meeting of the IPPS, held on October 29th.
