Shell Solar has reached a milestone in its efforts to provide rural communities with access to energy, in bringing PV electricity to 20 000 homes and small businesses in Sri Lanka. The company says strong demand for PV systems is likely to continue in Sri Lanka, where only 59% of households are connected to the electricity grid and thousands of rural residents rely on batteries and kerosene.

This month’s main topic is something which often crops up when renewables such as PV are discussed: the consumer’s willingness-to-pay (WTP). But that isn’t all that came up when trawling the wires for PV news — we found news of PV-powered emergency cellphones along Highway 50 from the Tahoe Daily Tribune in Nevada,* a vineyard in Chester County, Pennsylvania generating power via 30 panels,** and a green parking lot in Little Rock, Arkansas with PV charging of hybrid/electric cars.*** However interesting these might be, they are not startling when compared to some of the other news reports.
