Educational and social experiences and outcomes remain poor for autistic children in Western educational systems. Transitions between stages of schooling and beyond mandatory education are times of particular challenge. Traditionally, to address these difficulties, there has been a tendency to focus on the difficulties experienced by young people rather than their strengths and interests, leading to deficit-focused approaches to thinking and support. To disrupt this status quo, we co-produced a strengths-based, transition-support approach with children, families and educators to encourage a positive change in attitudes, awareness, and practices amongst those who support children’s transitions. ‘I am’ Digital Stories draw upon the creative, arts-based method of digital storytelling to enable children and young people to contribute their voices to transitions and educational decision-making. Here we report on why this methodology is needed, what it entails, and provide an example of how it has been embedded in the practice of an Educational Psychology team within a local authority in Wales, UK, with impactful outcomes. This example shows how it is possible to make changes within local service provision that makes a difference to children and families and has wider implications for any service that supports autistic children and young people.

India, being increasingly burdened with a huge number of diabetic patients, is severely affected by diabetic retinopathy (DR), a common vision-threatening microvascular complication of diabetes. This study, conducted at a tertiary government eye care hospital in Kolkata, investigates the psycho-social dimensions of DR and its broader implications for individuals, families, and society. The findings reveal that DR not only impairs vision but also results in significant emotional, social, and financial distress, disproportionately affecting economically and socially vulnerable populations. The present investigation found relationship between DR and at least five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): No Poverty (Goal 1), Good Health and Well-being (Goal 3), Quality Education (Goal 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8) and Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10). The study also explores a potential association between prolonged exposure to digital screen radiation and retinal damage, warranting further investigation. Finally, it proposes policy-oriented interventions to improve the Quality of Life (QoL) of individuals with DR, integrating both physical and mental health perspectives to reduce the societal burden of the disease.

Democratic parliaments require institutional memory and a sense of purpose in part derived from it. Research on the history of the European Parliament of the European Union has created three major impacts: first, to strengthen the recognition among the administrative and political leadership of the importance of understanding the institution’s history in the broader context of post-war European integration, resulting in the institutionalisation of the European Parliament History Service; second, the wide-spread understanding that research on the history of the European Parliament is relevant to its own collective identity, facilitating cooperation among its political groups and members across cultural and ideological barriers; and third, strengthening evidence-based politics and policymaking about current and future issues through the applied academic analysis of historical dynamics of previous initiatives, changing contexts, and historical trajectories, and feeding the findings to the political groups and members through a variety of events and outputs. Generating political, societal, and cultural impacts in a democratic parliament in this way crucially requires the willingness and ability of both researchers and administrative managers to understand the logics of different fields and to cross them to maximize the benefits for the institution.

This study examines the impact of Chama (women’s self-help group) membership on the land tenure security of rural women in Kakamega County, Kenya, particularly its influence on land ownership and the inclusion of title deeds. Using a mixed-methods approach, semi-structured questionnaires were administered to 107 rural women Chama members across Mumias East, Shinyalu, and Malava constituencies. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Firth logistic regression, while qualitative responses underwent thematic analysis using MAXQDA Pro Analytics to identify emerging insights. There is a significant positive relationship between Chama participation, and women's land ownership and name inclusion on title deed. Women with multiple Chama memberships were 157 % more likely to own land (OR = 2.57, p < 0.01), and each additional membership increased the likelihood of a woman's name appearing on a title deed by 76 % (OR = 1.76, p < 0.05). While multiple Chama participation enhanced legal awareness and financial capacity, financial empowerment alone was insufficient for title deed inclusion. Socio-cultural barriers remain a persistent obstacle to obtaining full land rights. The study recommends leveraging Chama structures for legal education and advocacy to equip women with the knowledge and strategies necessary to claim and retain land ownership effectively.

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) has been promoted as a technological solution to mitigate groundwater stress worldwide. Despite its potential, the adoption of ASR remains limited, primarily due to social and economic barriers. This study examines the socio-economic and socio-environmental impacts of a pilot ASR initiative in selected villages of South Bihar, India. By analysing the socio-economic and environmental outcomes through an interdisciplinary approach, we highlight the short-term, medium-term and long-term challenges of implementing “participatory” technology-driven interventions in resource-constrained rural communities. Our findings underscore the significance of local socio-economic conditions, participatory governance, and long-term sustainability in the diffusion of ASR technologies.

This study has outlined the existing nature of segregation between the previously settled colonies and colonies containing relocated families in a river erosion-affected mouza located on the left bank of the Ganga River in Malda. A randomly chosen set of samples containing displaced and previously settled inhabitants has been surveyed to understand the underlying nature of social conflicts and restrictions for further migration to safer places for better livelihood. The findings reveal that the existing nature of social segregation and a complex spatial interaction have developed a sense of brotherhood among the displaced families which has characterised the spatial setup regarding settlement growth. It gave birth to a different social setup for the people who occupied the vested land and suffered from identity loss. In contrast, the sense of security has attracted more people with similar social status to the relocated colonies.

Poverty and housing precariousness are largely overlooked in rural studies. Cultural stereotypes of happier, healthier and frugal rural life, strong community ties and solidarity have idealized the rural as a locus of resilience, concealing poverty that several groups are facing. This article presents the results and societal impact of the POVE.R.RE. research project in Greece. By shedding light on three predominantly rural- case study- areas, with different socio-geographic contexts and using mixed methods and participatory approach, the research aims at highlighting all factors contributing to poverty, deprivation and housing insecurity. The different profiles of rural poor, the lived experiences of deprivation but also coping strategies are articulated. Evidence supports the declining small-medium family farms suffering from economic crisis, climate change, and energy poverty. Increased inequalities, housing precariousness and higher living cost due to land deprivation, urban sprawl, and tourism gentrification also contribute to rural poverty. Informal and short-term family networks and sporadic bottom-up initiatives are filling public services gaps and limited policies. The overall social impact of the project (albeit recent) is the fact that reveals the complexity and hidden forms of rural poverty, challenges public narratives and highlights the need for localized rural welfare policies beyond the “benefits trap".

Structural dynamics and societal impact of contractor-mediated interstate tribal labor migration in the Rarh region of India

Migration serves as a crucial livelihood strategy for rural tribal populations facing limited economic opportunities, low wages, and agricultural instability. Contractors play a central role in facilitating this migration process, acting as intermediaries between laborers and employers. Through a multistage purposive sampling of 126 migrant households in the Rarh region of India, the research examines how contractors influence migration patterns, labor market outcomes, and social structures. The findings reveal that approximately 85 percent of migrants secure employment through a hierarchical contractor network comprising main contractors, professional sub-contractors, and micro-agent recruiters. This system creates structural dependency, as contractors provide advance payments that are later deducted from wages, reinforcing financial vulnerability. Migrants face significant challenges, including exploitative working conditions, wage suppression, and social marginalization due to language barriers and cultural displacement. Despite improving household income and living standards, contractor-driven migration perpetuates long-term economic entrapment and social dislocation. The study highlights the need for formal labor agreements, regulatory oversight of contractor practices, and enhanced social protections for migrant workers. By addressing these structural inequalities, policy interventions can promote fair labor practices and improve the resilience of migrant communities.

In the context of radicalization trends within post-migrant societies, this project focuses on Turkish ultranationalism. The research explores the relationship between radicalization and experiences of racism, aiming to enhance racism-critical competence and prevention work among social workers through a digital training program. Group discussions with young adults of Turkish descent were conducted and analyzed using content-analytical methods. The findings indicate that social workers and professionals in political education must adopt a critically reflective approach in their practice to avoid reproducing stereotypes and racism.

The Upper Rhine Graben region is favorable to the exploitation of deep geothermal energy, which could play a significant role in the decarbonization of the energy sector. However, there is a significant lack of awareness on this topic and related subjects. To address this gap, a school project was developed, centered on a role-playing game that engages students in applied geophysics. This innovative approach involves students using Raspberry-Shake sensors to delve into the practical aspects of seismology and seismic monitoring around a geothermal power plant in Bruchsal. We present practical activities and learning experiences designed to impart knowledge and understanding of geothermal energy, with a focus on potential applications in the region. It is complemented by a social scientific analysis aimed at assessing the students' understanding and the impact of the project on their awareness levels. The concept of autonomous monitoring by non-professionals could be further developed into participatory monitoring networks engaging residents in geothermal projects.
