Labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods has increasingly become a topic at the consumer and policymaker level. Using an online survey that included a conjoint analysis experiment, consumer preference for GM labeling on both fresh tomatoes and tomato plants was evaluated. Retailer (farmers market, grocery stores, mass merchandisers) sales and quantity sold were simulated to examine the impact of introducing GM labeling as well as certified GM labeling. Results indicate that retailers can increase revenues via price increases associated with the introduction of GM labeling.

Co-operatives play a vital role in supplying various goods and services in the UK, as well as in other parts of the world. In the past twenty years co-operatives have become important players in modern organic food supply chains, providing small-scale farmers with access to knowledge and markets, alongside opportunities to scale up their production. This teaching case is developed from qualitative interviews with current and former members and employees from the South Devon Organic Producers (SDOP) Co-operative, an awardwinning organic vegetable grower co-operative based in South Devon (UK). The case is supplemented with interviews with key managerial personnel at the SDOP’s main stakeholder Riverford Organic Farms Limited. The case explores how the relationship between SDOP and Riverford is the key to understanding SDOP’s participation in the organic food chain.

This study evaluates the market power and cost efficiency of China’s rice processing firms through a stochastic frontier cost function. The effect of market power on cost efficiency is tested using the two-stage ordinary least squares method and a Hausman-Taylor type instrumental variable. On average, firms in the industry have weak market power but high cost efficiency, which has been declining since the 2008 global financial crisis. Firms with stronger market power exhibit higher cost efficiency, contradicting the quiet life hypothesis. This effect is more significant for firms with weaker market power after the global financial crisis. The enhancement of market power may help save resources for improving management and efficiency for Chinese rice processing industry.
