ABSTRACT: The time spent by urban residents indoors has been increasing annually, thus, prioritizing the enhancement of indoor spaces into green spaces to improve the quality of life. Even with limited environmental conditions indoors, an active living wall and LED light techniques have enabled us to explore indoor green environments. In the present study, the yellow/orange-colored flowers invasive ornamental species,Lantana camara‘splendens’, was cultivated in 4.0 m2 of the active living wall under a non-decorative LED lamp, adjusted to optimize performance in the coverage area. This study evaluated the development of lantana in the active living wall under different light intensities (135 watts and 90 watts) in a room with light restriction. Parameters such as plant height, flowering, SPAD chlorophyll content, and vegetative cover were analyzed. The results indicated that Lantana camara ‘splendens’ is suitable for use in active living walls and blooms at a low light intensity when the light is uniformly applied.

Risk factors associated with stillbirth in sows 与母猪死产相关的危险因素

ABSTRACT: In this study, the risk factors associated with stillbirth in sows were identified and their odds ratio assessed. For this purpose, 587 farrowings on Farm A and 929 on Farm B were monitored, and the sow parity, body condition score, farrowing duration, total number of piglets born, numbers of live births, stillbirths, and mummified piglets, obstetric interventions, and piglet sex and weight were recorded. At the end of farrowing, piglets classified as stillborn were necropsied to confirm the diagnosis. Consequently, 5.49% of the piglets on Farm A and 5.10% of those on Farm B were stillborn. On both farms, sows with a high parity, prolonged farrowing, and a large litter size had the highest odds ratio of stillbirths. On Farm B, farrowing intervention through the use of vaginal palpation and oxytocin increased the odds of stillbirth by 1.7 and 2.5 times, respectively. Heavy litters increased the odds of stillbirth by 1.4 times. Additionally, low-birth-weight piglets were 2.3 and 3.1 times more likely than their medium-birth-weight and high-birth-weight counterparts, respectively, to be stillborn. In conclusion, on both farms, the risk factors associated with stillbirth were a high parity, a large litter size, and prolonged farrowing.

Markets and commercialization channels in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul: relevant factors for fruit and vegetable producers 南巴西大德州中部地区的市场和商业化渠道:果蔬生产者的相关因素

ABSTRACT: This article presents statistical analysis that verified the diversity of markets and marketing channels used by family farmers in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul/ Brazil, examining the occurrence of variables associated with the number of channels accessed. The non-probabilistic sample included 129 family farmers who produce fruits and vegetables in four municipalities in the Central Region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the years 2019-2021. Nonparametric tests and bivariate statistical analysis were used, considering the significance level (≤) of 0.05. There was an average number of 2.4 channels in the Local and Conventional Markets, and 3.1 for the Local/Territorial and Public/Institutional Markets. However, a maximum of three channels is used in 75% of establishments. There was a low negative correlation between the mean age of the family farmers and the degree of diversification of the channels used to market the products and a positive correlation between infrastructure and diversificationof channels adopted and,family work and diversification. Finally, a dependency relationship was reported between the number of public policies accessed and the diversification of channels.

Genetic identification, clinical and epidemiological aspects of an equine infectious anemia outbreak in the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil 巴西南大德州马传染性贫血暴发的遗传鉴定、临床和流行病学方面

ABSTRACT: The study describes the genetic identification, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics of an outbreak of equine infectious anemia occurring in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three animals kept in the periurban region of Uruguaiana city tested positive for the AGID test. The serology was performed as a requirement for transit. None of the animals showed clinical signs of infection, one animal was necropsied, and the others were stolen. In the post-mortem examination, no macroscopic changes were observed, and microscopically, discrete hemosiderosis was detected in fragments of the liver and spleen. Amplifying and sequencing a proviral DNA fragment in blood, spleen, and mesenteric lymph node samples confirmed EIAV infection. Phylogenetic analysis of the first sequenced EIAV sample from the Rio Grande do Sul State indicates a high similarity with other Brazilian samples. Results confirmed the viral presence in the state’s herds and described epidemiological and virological characteristics of EIA that contribute to the maintenance and dissemination of the virus in herds.

Minituber production in yam for alternative vegetative propagation: types of cuttings, substrates, and anatomy 用于替代营养繁殖的山药小蘖生产:插枝类型、基质和解剖

ABSTRACT: Yam is a tuber vegetable crop with vegetative propagation. The crop is low yielding due to the difficulty of obtaining quality material for propagation and the high cost of acquisition. The cutting technique is a new alternative for vegetative propagation of yam. The present studyevaluated the production of minitubers of yam through cuttings, and follow the formational growth of the minitubers. Different types of cuttings, obtained from three positions on the shoots, and three substrates were tested. The types of cuttings and substrates did not significantly affect the number of minitubers per cutting, this number ranging from 1.18 to 1.75. The best results were obtained using Tropstrato Florestal® and median-position cuttings for the following variables: minituber length (17.47 mm), minituber diameter (12.63 mm), minituber fresh weight (2.12 g), and percentage of cuttings with two minitubers (75%). Anatomical analysis showed cell divisions and starch accumulation in the nodal region at seven days after planting the cutting. Emergence of the minituber could be observed at 21 days. The production of yam minitubers through stem cuttings is enhanced using cuttings obtained from the median position of the shoot and using the commercial substrate Tropstrato Florestal®.

Acid resistance of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028 after desiccation stress during peanut storage 花生贮藏干燥胁迫后鼠伤寒沙门菌ATCC 14028的耐酸性

ABSTRACT: Salmonella is a relevant pathogen, which causes foodborne outbreaks associated with both high and low moisture foods (LMF). This study evaluated the effect of previous desiccation stress on the acid resistance of S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028 using blanched peanut kernels as an LMF model. Salmonella was recovered from the peanut samples throughout 180 days of blanched peanut kernels storage at 28 ºC. During this period two death rates were verified, 0.04 log cfu/g/day in the first 30 days and 0.007 log cfu/g/day between 30 and180 days.Regarding acid resistance, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in the Salmonella growth/death kinetics between the undesiccated sample (TSB)and the cells recovered from peanut samples over 180 days of storage after 4 h at pHs 3.0, 3.5, 4.5 and 7.2. The average growth rate observed for pH 7.2 was 0.44 log cfu/ml/h. At pH 4.5, the Salmonella counts did not change significantly over 4 h. In contrast, Salmonella populations declined by 0.14 to 0.29 log cfu/ml/h at pH 3.5. At pH 3.0 declines were estimated to be 0.65 log cfu/ml/h for the undesiccated sample and 2.07 log cfu/ml/h for Salmonella recovered from peanuts stored for 120 days. Therefore, our data indicated that desiccation stress caused during the peanut storagedid not influence the Salmonella acid resistance.

This study evaluated the effect of previous desiccation stress on the acid resistance of S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028 using blanched peanut kernels as an LMF model. Salmonella was recovered from the peanut samples throughout 180 days of blanched peanut kernels storage at 28 ºC. During this period two death rates were verified, 0.04 log cfu/g/day in the first 30 days and 0.007 log cfu/g/day between 30 and180 days.Regarding acid resistance, there was no difference (P > 0.05) in the Salmonella growth/death kinetics between the undesiccated sample (TSB)and the cells recovered from peanut samples over 180 days of storage after 4 h at pHs 3.0, 3.5, 4.5 and 7.2. The average growth rate observed for pH 7.2 was 0.44 log cfu/ml/h. At pH 4.5, the Salmonella counts did not change significantly over 4 h. In contrast, Salmonella populations declined by 0.14 to 0.29 log cfu/ml/h at pH 3.5. At pH 3.0 declines were estimated to be 0.65 log cfu/ml/h for the undesiccated sample and 2.07 log cfu/ml/h for Salmonella recovered from peanuts stored for 120 days. Clinico-pathological and immunohistochemical findings in a case of bovine cutaneous angiomatosis in a Holstein heifer 1例荷斯坦小母牛皮肤血管瘤病的临床病理和免疫组织化学结果

ABSTRACT: Bovine cutaneous angiomatosis (BCA) is a rare condition characterized by vasoproliferative skin lesions mainly affecting cattle in the northern hemisphere. An eight-month-old Holstein heifer showed two skin easy-bleeding nodules bulging from the epidermis in the forehead and close to the right prescapular region. Skin lesions were within the dermis and had an irregular surface and a soft heterogeneous reddish parenchyma composed of numerous variable-sized arterioles, veins, and capillaries surrounded by abundant collagenous fibrous tissue. Immunohistochemical assays evidenced endothelial cells lining proliferative vascular structure immunolabeled for CD31 and Von Willebrand factor, and vascular smooth muscle cells immunostained for smooth muscle actin. All clinical, pathological, and immunohistochemical features observed in the Holstein heifer were hallmarks of BCA. Considering its potential for hereditary spread, BCA must be included in the differential diagnosis of easily bleeding skin nodules that do not respond to routine topical wound treatments to prevent its spread in Brazilian herds.

Smartphone-based rapid and low-cost method for the determination of eugenol content of clove essential oil 基于智能手机的丁香精油中丁香酚含量的快速低成本测定方法

ABSTRACT: The determination of eugenol in clove essential oil was performed using a smartphone-operated device, which was used for image capture and processing. The colorimetric reaction with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was used, and the lighting conditions were evaluated to capture images directly in 2 mL disposable vessels. The free application PhotoMetrix UVC was used for partial least squares regression calibration with suitable values (R² greater than 0.99). The accuracy of the proposed method was compared with traditional methods, such as gas chromatography (GC) and spectrophotometry, and it can be observed that there were no significant differences (Student’s t-test (P > 0.05), with agreements from 97% to 101%. The smartphone method allowed the evaluation of several samples in a few minutes, with simple analysis steps and easy interpretation of the results. The miniaturized scale allowed the use of small amounts of reagents with minimal waste generation. Therefore, the proposed method can be easily operated in the field and allows the evaluation of the quality of clove essential oil in places of restricted access without the need for a laboratory structure and specialized analysts.

Number of lesions, severity and incubation period of isolates of Corynespora cassiicola in soybean cultivars 大豆品种桃核孢子病的发病数、严重程度及潜伏期

ABSTRACT: This study checked the severity and incubation period of isolates of Coryneporacassiicola (C.c) in soybean cultivars, as well verified whether the position of leaflets influences the susceptibility of the plant to target spot. The experiment was conducted in randomized block with 8 isolates of C.c and 8 soybean cultivars factorial scheme, with five repetitions each block. The plants were inoculated with suspension from 2x104 conidia mL-1. The number of lesions per leaf and the incubation period (IP) were evaluated. The ISO 4S isolate caused greater number of lesions in plants. BMX Potência RR, BMX Força RR, and NA 5909 RG had the lowest occurrence of lesions, while the cultivar BMX Elite IPRO showed the highest number of lesions. More lesions were detected in the lower leaf compared to the upper leaf of the plants. The longest IP was observed for ISO 4S in both leaflets, while the lowest IP for ISO 1A, 3A and 2A in the lower leaf, and for ISO 11S and 1S in the median leaf. For cultivars, significant difference in IP was observed only in the lower leaf, with the longest and shortest IP detected for BMX Elite IPRO and BRS 284, respectively. In general, the upper leaf of the plants presented the shortest IP while the lower leaf had the longest IP.

ABSTRACT: The Ilex paraguariensis is a species native to Brazil, Paraguay and Argentine, valued by its positive effects on human health. Mate processing consists of the following stages: pre-drying (rapid drying at high temperature, known as sapeco operation), drying, and milling. In order to verify the current process and to propose future improvements to the mate processing, thermal and mass balance analysis were applied to industrial mate processing units. Results showed that the consumption of energy in sapeco and drying operations exceeds the calorific input necessary for these operations. These results verify the need for a change in the management of temperatures in the sapeco and drying stages of mate processing in order to optimize the consumption of energy, resulting in lower costs, with positive effects on the quality of the mate products.
