Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming more and more popular to support a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Time-Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is a technique to enable ultra reliable and ultra low-power wireless multi-hop networks. TSCH consist of a channel hopping scheme for sending link-layer frames in different time slots and frequencies in order to efficiently combat external interference and multi-path fading. The keystone of TSCH is the scheduling algorithm, which determines for every node at which opportunity (a combination of time slots and channels) it is allowed to send. However, current scheduling algorithms are not suited for dense deployments and have important scalability limitations. In this paper, we investigate TSCH's scheduling performance in dense deployments and show how the scheduling can be improved for such environments. We performed an extensive analysis of the scalability for different scheduling approaches showing the performance drops as the number of nodes increases. Moreover, we propose a novel Decentralized Broadcast-based Scheduling algorithm called DeBraS, based on selective broadcasting to inform nodes about each other's schedule. Through extensive simulations, we show that DeBraS is highly more scalable than centralized solutions and that it outperforms the current decentralized 6Tisch algorithms in up to 88.5% in terms of throughput for large network sizes.

Most of nowadays existing mobile applications are based on the client-server model, their development requires skills on both client and server sides. In this paper, we propose a new backend server solution, enough generic to support a high number of client-server applications based on real-time content distribution and synchronisation. This solution, namely DECODE, allows a mobile application developer to focus only on the client part and relieve him entirely from the server part implementation and deployment.

The increasing demand for flexibility in WiFi network deployments along with more stringent requirements on performance and security stand in stark contrast to today's ossified and expensive WiFi architecture. In particular, today's WiFi networks consists of a large number of control and data plane network functions that are either bundled into a single access controller running on proprietary hardware or are distributed across the network to run on WiFi access points. This approach does not properly reflect the broad and evolving diversity of scenarios in which WiFi is deployed. This paper makes the case for a functional decomposition of the WiFi: we want to support the allocation and composition of individual (virtualized and programmable) WiFi function blocks, where and when they are most useful. This allocation may also be adjusted dynamically, e.g., during a failover or a scale-out. We present our vision and a rough functional decomposition, describe our proposed LegoFi architecture, and explore how LegoFi can benefitial in four different deployment scenarios.

We present and evaluate a procedure that exploits throughput prediction to select the DASH video quality sequence (sequence of representations) with the highest average bit rate and the fewest quality switches, while explicitly taking into account throughput and time uncertainty. Experiments with an Android implementation of the proposed procedure show that it can exploit throughput prediction to achieve a high QoE (Quality of Experience) with a small number of video pauses and video quality switches, even when the throughput and time uncertainty is large.

Towards 5G mobile networks, the low-latency and high-bandwidth services are highly anticipated; however, legacy 3G and 4G networks now suffers from the mobile data surge. In this sense, pushing network services to the network edge has the potential to improve the traffic latency, user experience, and offload Internet traffic. Although the LTE/LTE-A network can highly benefit from the Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) principle, a detailed MEC architecture is not currently in place. In this work, we propose a modular architecture for the Mobile Edge Host that is ETSI compliant and describe the functional mapping of the architecture to LTE systems. Proof-of-concept demonstrations based on the OpenAirInterface (OAI), a software implementation of LTE/LTE-A systems, present significant benefits of adopting the MEC concept in data caching use case.
