The emergence of ‘big data’ offers organizations unprecedented opportunities to gain and maintain competitive advantage. Trying to exploit the strategic business potential embedded in big data, many organizations have started to renovate their business models or develop new ones, giving rise to the phenomenon of big-data business models (BDBMs). Although BDBM research is still in its infancy, a significant number of studies on the topic have been published since 2014. We thus suggest it is time to perform a critical review and assessment of the literature at the intersection of business models and big data (analytics), thereby responding to recent calls for further research on and sustained analysis of BDBMs. In particular, our review uses three major criteria (BDBM types, dimensions, and deployment) to assess the state of the BDBM literature and identify shortcomings in this literature. On this basis, we derive and discuss five central research perspectives (supply chain, stakeholder, ethics, national, and process), providing guidance for future research and theory development in the area. These perspectives also have practical implications on how to address the current BDBM deployment gap.

Postal services play a vital role in people’s life across the EU and affordable and reliable postal services are essential to realize the EU’s Digital Single Market. The liberalization of the postal sector and the establishment of a single market for postal services in the EU has been pursued progressively by opening up national postal markets to competition. Protection of postal service users is strongly intertwined with the concept of universal service in postal services. This is partly due to the fact that universal service (US) is deep-rooted in EU law of postal services, more than in any other areas of EU law in regulated market. The relationship between US and consumer protection is a fundamental area of EU law concerning postal consumers. At the same time, this relationship is a fragmented area of EU law in general, and EU postal services law in specific. The relationship between consumer protection and universal service is, in fact, an under-researched area in EU law studies. This fragmentation has further increased as a result of the emerging disconnection between the EU (and national) legal framework of postal services and due to increased digitalization and the rise of electronic communications. Accordingly, analyzing the fragmented relationship between US and consumer rules is key to answer the fundamental question of who the postal consumer is and which EU rules have tangible effects for her legal position. In view of the above, this paper will focus on the following research question: How does EU law facilitate the different (vulnerable and the active) consumers in the digital postal market?

In the past few years the insurance community has paid increasing attention to the “protection gap”—the extent to which significant property losses are not covered by insurance. Because insurance plays an important economic and social role in many ways, the protection gap is significant to individuals, firms, the communities in which they reside or operate, and the economy as a whole. This paper explores protection gaps in the context of homeowners insurance in the United States: what they are, where they occur, what causes them, and how to cure them.

Purpose – This study’s the ultimate goal is to analyze competitiveness improvement on multinational enterprises as firstly providing which factors are to strengthen or weaken competitiveness, secondly investigating if hypotheses development and research design is correct and thirdly finding significant implications for research and practices across country specific advantage.
Design/methodology – Using feedback data provided by 250 firms, we extracted variable factors and hypotheses, which were empirically carried out by reliability and validity testing, correlation analysis, path analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis to prove which factors are to make the positive effect on the improvement of overseas subsidiaries’ management performance and competitiveness.
Findings – Through proceeding empirical analysis study, we found out that technology management capability, knowledge management capability, and local management capability had a statistically significant effect on the improvement of overseas subsidiaries’ competitiveness, while linked activity capability revealed a negative effect.
Originality/value – During business globalization, overseas investments and establishment of overseas subsidiaries have been essential. It is anticipated that this study results would be meaningful for analysis on multinational enterprises’ competitiveness and helpful in promoting their entry into Korean market and enhancing their competitiveness. This paper would also help Korea government develops new FDI model and induce more investment from global major companies to Korea region.

On August 19, 2019, the U.S. Business Roundtable (BR), comprising the CEOs of more than 200 of America’s largest corporations, issued a new mission statement on “the purpose of a corporation†(BR, 2019). The press release noted that each periodic update on principles of corporate governance since 1997 had endorsed the principle of maximizing shareholder value. In contrast, the new statement commits signatory CEOs “to lead their companies for the benefit of all stakeholders--customers, employees, suppliers, communities and shareholders†(BR, 2019). “[Milton] Friedman must be turning in his grave,†a Fortune magazine article declared (Murray, 2019).

There is hardly any evidence on earnings properties of co-operatives for which profit maximisation is not a primary goal. We find that cooperatives in Germany exhibit higher levels of timely loss recognition when they have more members(owners), when they pursue charitable objectives, and when the local corporate income tax rate is high. Cooperatives are more prone to avoid reporting small losses when members can be held privately liable in the cooperative’s bankruptcy and when the local income tax rate is low. Housing cooperatives exhibit different earnings properties than other types of cooperatives. Overall, tax motives are strongly related to cooperatives’ earnings properties, but members’ private liability and agency problems of “equity” also have an influence.
We also analyze how the earnings properties of cooperatives differ from those of (propensity- score matched) privately held corporations. Both types of firm typically have a relatively large number of owners, but in contrast to privately held corporations, cooperatives are generally not profit-maximizing firms and must be run by their owners. We find that cooperatives exhibit a significantly higher propensity to avoid reporting small losses, but also lower absolute discretionary accruals. The evidence on the differences in timely loss recognition is not conclusive. Managers of privately held corporations seem to engage in opportunistic earnings management more aggressively. Still, cooperatives try harder to avoid reporting small losses, indicating that the negative financial and non-financial consequences of “false alarms” seem to be relatively high for cooperatives and their members.

Marshall's idea of 'representative firm' was created to reconcile his dynamic view of individual firms with the static view of industries. But this idea was somewhat nebulous and did not last very long in the economics literature. Marshall first wrote about the representative firm in his "Principles of Economics" published in 1890 but the idea was driven out of the literature by 1928, when it was replaced by A. C. Pigou's idea of the 'equilibrium firm'.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to clarify the distinction between the Global Value Chains and selected strands of the business literature; business networks, strategy, and international business. These four research areas have starting questions that are often different and the audiences they address also differ. There have been attempts to establish links across these theories, but these are exceptions rather than the rule. Design/methodology/approach – The basic principles and concepts of the four areas are identified. The results are used to develop a summary matrix of the approaches. The methodological path is inductive and inferential, as the task involves searching for similarities, complementarities, and overlaps across the four social science disciplines. Findings – Literature of the studied fields overlap on the issues they are trying to understand, even if they do not use identical terminology. The four areas advocate the same principle in understanding the organizational field: complexity. Firms are triggered to enter into exchange with other companies. Originality/value – The theoretical contribution of this article is based on the idea that although the four research fields – GVC, Business Networks, Strategy, and International Business - advance independently from each other, common origins can be observed, allowing a set of common propositions.
