As cloud computing industry adoption rate is increasing, service cost management and optimization are becoming one of the most important issues from the perspective of cloud users. This paper is looking into possibility of using information about application type and its resource usage profile in the process of identifying optimized service placement in cloud environments. Such placement should result in minimized service execution cost, while maintaining acceptable quality of service, which is usually defined by Service Level Agreement. We present two application types observed as use cases for a cloud service placement optimization and use them to explain the process of a service resource usage profile creation. We discuss how the resource usage profiles can be used for service execution cost optimization. The initial results of the service resource usage profiles analysis are presented followed by an analysis and discussion on their application in optimization of cloud service execution cost.

Through the lifetime, a person might stumble upon diseases many of which may be deadly. In order to save the person's life, doctors will prescribe many medicines that may help cure the person. To make stuff easier technology has introduced many new ways to facilitate the struggle that the person may undergo. One of the new ways introduced is an application that makes it easier for cancer and heart disease patients to get their medicines without going through the hustle of making several trips to the pharmacy.

This paper proposes a method for the problem of processing high-dimensional data. When one has thousands of features (attributes) in a dataset, it is hard to achieve an efficient feature selection. To cope with this problem, we propose the use of a binary particle swarm optimization algorithm combined with the C4.5 as a classifier in the fitness function for the selection of informative attributes. The results obtained on 11 datasets were analyzed statistically and reveal that the proposed method, called BPSO+C4.5, outperforms known classifiers, i.e., C4.5, Naive Bayes, and SVM.

The paper addresses the possibilities of application of discrete Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and Fast Fourier transform (FFT) for detection of voltage dips in the distribution grid with high level of distributed generation in the concept of the future smart grids. Modelling and testing are carried out in the MATLAB/SimPowerSystems environment. Modified IEEE13 bus system with high level of distributed generation from wind and solar sources, with different control algorithms, was used. Some advantages of FFT is noted, especially when the task is very fast detection of voltage dips.

This paper describes the already completed and verified first stage of a work in progress that aims to port a proposed optimised framework for virtual machine placement on hosts in a given cloud computing datacentre. The previously implemented and simulated framework using Matlab is being transferred to a richer cloud computing simulation environment that is CloudSim. The use of CloudSim permits, apart from validating the previous research, the introduction of many additional parameters and criteria in the simulated scenario thus enabling a far richer and in-depth analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of the proposed solution, such as power-awareness, that is an additional feature included in CloudSim libraries.

In clinical applications, peripheral nerve stimulation is usually delivered by means of commercial devices. The main use of these devices is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, in fact the coils are designed for a good stimulation of brain. The purpose of this paper is to design a new coil for magnetic stimulation of nerves, which allows a deep stimulation but, at the same time, characterized by high focality. The problem so formulated is a multi-objective one. The multi-objective Biogeography Based Optimization algorithm (BiMO) is applied to solve the inverse problem.

Recently multi-agent patrolling became more and more crucial in security, monitoring, etc. applications. It can be used, for example, to monitor points of interest in space, such as measurement points or entrances to a guarded area. A good patrolling strategy would ensure frequent visits to all points of interest defined by a user. A variety of centralized and distributed approaches exist already to the multi-agent patrolling problem, ranging from simple reactive solutions to sophisticated planning approaches. However there has been no self-organizing partition based solution proposed that can match and improve on the performance of already existing algorithms. In this article we introduce a self-organizing autonomous algorithm to partition a graph into non-overlapping subgraphs and assign the resulting subgraphs to agents to perform patrolling. We compare our solution to other patrolling algorithms in a thorough performance evaluation and show that our autonomous solution can outperform state of the art patrolling schemes.

This paper concerns the problem of operating region enlargement for centrifugal pumps. A hybrid management system is described, which combines both the valve throttling and the pump speed adjustment at variable consumer's demands and piping conditions. Solution of the consumed power minimization problem is found and realized with the flexible energy management controller-oriented software. To provide accurate pumping at low speeds, an algorithm for the affinity laws correction is offered. As well, an effective procedure is proposed aiming to provide pumping above the nominal speed under an accurate torque control.

A novel discrete-time synthesis for WAN-based computer control of networked control systems with a class of nonlinear plants is developed. Such a networked control systems are assumed to comprise an affine nonlinear plant process to be controlled and a linear digital controller in presence of WAN induced time delays. It can be viewed as a typical hybrid control system with network-induced delays. Sufficient conditions for guaranteed exponential closed-loop stability have been derived via the proposed discrete-time synthesis. These novel results have been tested by application to an illustrative example from the literature. The obtained numerical and simulation results have demonstrated considerable control effectiveness as well as quality transient performance for the class of affine nonlinear plant system models.

Railway communications are essential nowadays enabling passengers to stay connected to entertainment as well as other bandwidth-demanding applications. This is particularly challenging because wireless communication standards are not fully customized to overcome railway environment challenges including high handover frequency, group handover and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. In this paper, a novel system architecture for railway wireless communications is proposed. The proposed heterogeneous system utilizes the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP), the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular protocol and as well as the IEEE 802.11n (Wi-Fi) wireless protocol. The goal of the proposed system is to quantify the overall system performance through several metrics (such as the data loss ratio, average packets dropped, handover delay and LTE delay) thereby ensuring that the proposed system can meet the required entertainment benchmarks. A performance simulation-based study is conducted to validate the feasibility of the proposed system in an urban railway environment. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture achieves improved performance for a high-load scenario even with added background traffic as compared to a conventional railway architecture for wireless communications.
