We compared the validity of two low cost camera systems to analyze the fi ltration activity of Diplodon chilensis (Gray, 1828), the most common freshwater bivalve in southern Chile, by using time lapse photography. One camera system (Nikon D300) was connected with an external fl ash, whereas the other system (GoPro Hero 3+) contained a permanent video light source. Size change of the exhalant siphon area (ESA) of Diplodon individuals was used to track activity changes over time. The siphon of D. chilensis was completely closed for 3.4 % ± 5.2 % (mean ± SD) of the recording time and it shows a nearly completely opened siphon for 42.7 % ± 22.9 % of the recording time. The mean siphon opening was 68.3 % ± 26.5 % of its potential opening area. Although a red fi lter was placed in front of the video light source, the mobile fauna, especially Aegla abtao (Schmitt, 1942) and unidentifi ed small fi shes were highly attracted by the permanent light. We conclude that both low cost cameras are very suitable for in situ time lapse observation of freshwater clams since both deliver good image quality. However, special attention should be given to the light source since permanent light attracts animals including predators which might change fi ltration activity of D. chilensis.

We aimed to identify faeces belonging to either Darwin’s fox (Lycalopex fulvipes) or kodkod (Leopardus guigna) by using molecular genetic techniques, and to describe and compare the gastrointestinal parasites harbored by both carnivores in Chiloé Island. We found that 60% (25/42) and 88% (28/32) of faeces of Darwin’s fox and kodkod had parasite eggs. This study provided the fi rst record of Aspiculuris sp. and trematodes in Darwin’s fox and Aspiculuris sp., Trichuris sp., Capillaria sp., Isospora sp. and trematodes in kodkod, which may correspond to either preyor host-originated parasites.

Myopa metallica Camras1992 is a parasitic fl y, endemic to Chile, whose distribution was unknown. In this study, four new localities are reported between the Atacama and Metropolitan regions using citizen science. Our work breaks down the methodological barriers, providing a distribution for a rare and conspicuous thick-headed fl y.

The aim of this study was to understand the level of knowledge and the perceptions of a local population with a high indigenous component (38.5%) towards birds of prey in order to address wildlife conservation strategies. We determined knowledge of birds of prey and biological control of rodent pests by applying a closed questionnaire; and perceptions of these species by applying a perception survey. Our study subjects were rural and urban residents in southern Chile. The results indicate low levels of knowledge about birds of prey and mainly positive perceptions, despite the presence of superstitions about raptors. These fi ndings show the importance of socio-cultural dimensions and their implications for environmental education – which should be oriented towards changing attitudes to target species and particularly belief systems which determine attitudes. These changes are very important for raptor conservation programmes and reliance on raptors for the biological control of rodent pests.
