Edwin Schreeche-Powell’s low opinion of The Open University is transformed when he realises he has given too much weight and value to ill-informed opinion and not enough to real experience. Abandoning this prejudice is the beginning of a learning journey in prison that takes him from undergraduate studies to a PhD. Margaret Gough never expected to go to university and was shocked to find herself serving a long prison sentence. In this chapter she provides a vivid account of how one led to the other as she rediscovered her talent for learning in prison. David Honeywell provides a short account of his PhD research into the Higher Education experiences of people with experience of imprisonment. In addition to charting their pathways, Honeywell is unusually well-equipped to combine them with his own account of transformation. A long sequence of prison sentences is brought to a close by his entry level study with The Open University. So begins a long haul that culminates in the triumph of a PhD, his own imprisonment a distant memory, but never forgotten.
