Learning is perhaps the most fundamental part of the human condition. From the moment we are born until our final breath, we take in, process and react to our worlds. Prior to finding myself in prison, learning was not something that I gave much consideration to. Learning in prison, however, quickly became an important aspect of my life. My introduction to The Open University has turned out to be more valuable than I ever imagined....

This chapter traces the development of The Open University’s teaching and learning in prisons and with prisoners. Key milestones are identified and contemporary developments and dilemmas are discussed. The chapter closes by examining the potentials of digital technologies to transform OU prison learning.

Excuse me are you a prisoner? This is a hilarious question I am often asked as I walk to and from my prison wing to the education block. I never thought that just by developing my knowledge through studying with The Open University, my outwardly expressive demeanour would suggest to others that I am someone of a professional disposition. I can relate this to an early experience when I was challenged for walking with a limp, implying I held a bad attitude....

Prison is like a microcosm of technocratic totalitarianism where every action collapses under the weight of its own bureaucracy. This often requires a member of senior management to override the rules in order to get things done! If you don’t have a powerful backer, it’s not happening. Most actions, from asking for toilet paper to doing a prison magazine, become a Kafkaesque nightmare rivalling Franz Kafka’s novels such as ...

My Open University journey began after being found guilty of murder at 41 and given a life sentence with a minimum tariff of 16 years for a crime I did not commit. I found myself at HMP Belmarsh, certainly not one of the more attractive or forward-thinking prisons in the UK, with officers wanting to maintain their ‘harsh’ reputation. There was little choice of activities and I was immediately assigned to packing tea and cereal packs....

This chapter uses the voices from an Open University oral history project, Time to Think, to tell the extraordinary story of developing teaching and learning in a prison camp outside Belfast. As the political conflict in Northern Ireland gathered pace in the early 1970s, the newly established Open University was drawn into the collateral consequences in ways that were to prove both unpredictably fruitful and historically providential.
