This study aimed to perform a qualitative and a quantitative assessment of the prevalence of genes encoding resistance to beta-lactam, tetracycline, and chloramphenicol antibiotics in samples of DNA isolated from air in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and a municipal waste management plant (WMP). Air samples were collected in the mechanical (MP) and biological (BP) processing units of WWTP and WMP in winter and spring. The samples of air were collected by impingement into PBS solution and subsequently, DNA was isolated. The prevalence of the 16S r RNA gene and ARGs was determined by PCR, and the most abundant ARGs were quantified by qPCR. The highest diversity of the analyzed ARGs was noted in air samples collected in the mechanical processing units of the WWTP (winter) and the WMP (spring). The copy of ARGs varied between treatment units and seasons. ARGs were most abundant in air samples collected in spring in the MP units of both the WWTP and the WMP. The study demonstrated that ARGs are ubiquitous in the air in both WWTPs and WMPs. The presence of ARGs in the air can exert a negative impact on the health of plant employees.

The objective of the undertaken investigations was to examine in laboratory conditions whether an introduction of an assisting opoka rock layer with the granulation of 1–6 mm into the ground improves the removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from domestic sewage. The performed investigations concerned the layer supporting the removal efficiency of domestic sewage in a home sewage treatment plant under infiltration drainage. The model investigations of wastewater purification were carried out in a medium sand bed with an assisting, 0.10 and 0.20 m thick opoka rock layer. The effectiveness of wastewater purification related to basic qualitative indicators (total suspended solids – TSS, BOD 5 , COD, total nitrogen, total phosphorus) was in line with the Polish standards on sewage disposal into grounds and surface water. The medium sand soil bed with the 0.20 m thick assisting opoka rock layer showed higher effectiveness of wastewater purification than that 0.10 m thick. The application of the 0.20 m thick opoka rock layer increased the removal efficiency regarding TSS by 6.2%, total nitrogen by 20.4%, ammonium nitrogen by 8.3% and total phosphorus by 2.9%, and removal efficiency regarding BOD 5 by 1.2% and COD by 1.9% with relation to the 0.10 m thick assisting layer (all percentages − in average). The results confirm that the natural opoka rock with the granulation of 1–6 mm can be used to assist in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from wastewater with the application of infiltration drainage.

This study aimed to evaluate the vermicompost quality of sewage sludge (SS) mixed with sugar beet pulp (SBP) and cow dung (CD) wastes employing Eisenia fetida. The basic issue faced in the wastewater treatment plant is how to reduce the amount of sewage sludge? This paper discusses an insitu vermicomposting approach for the reuse of sewage sludge. A total of 11 reactors containing various waste combinations were organized and changes in physicochemical parameters were evaluated during 90 days of the experiment. The results indicated that SS could be converted into a good quality product by vermicomposting if suitable mixing quantities are provided (50% SS, 25% SBP, 25% CD). Vermicomposting caused significant reductions in pH, TOC, the content of heavy metals, and C/N ratio, while electric conductivity and NPK content increased as compared to initial mixtures. The pre-sent study implied that the application of sewage sludge in the agricultural fields after vermicomposting could be a suitable and usable approach for sewage disposal.

Municipal solid waste management is still one of the major environmental challenges at a national level, and although with national and regional waste plans in place, the Republic of North Macedonia with its eight regions has only one standard landfill active, and at least 54 non-standard municipal landfills and hundreds of dump sites and old landfills. In the light of the soon expected regional establishment of an integrated and self-sustainable waste management system in the eastern and north-eastern regions, to increase awareness by the local population and hospitality enterprises for source separation schemes of organic waste, as largest producers of organic waste, Goce Delcev & Hellenic Mediterranean Universities together with Municipality of Katerini, Municipality of Yermasoyia and Municipality of Probistip launched joint project co-funded by EU, Utilizing pay-as-you-throw Systems and Autonomous Composting Units for Biowastes Management in Touristic Areas (BIOWASTE). This paper aims to present the environmental benefits of the project implementation and scaling up process that was developed, aiming to expand the BIOWASTE project processes in the whole Municipality of Probishtip.
