The amine catalyzed nitro aldol reactions between nitromethane and aldehydes are found to be reversible in an alcohol solvent on the basis of the reaction monitoring by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The reaction in alcohols is particularly rapid to complete the equilibrium in a short period of time at room temperature, producing nitro aldol product in high yields. Triton B is especially effective as catalyst in the nitro aldol reactions of nitromethane in methanol. Only a small catalytic loading of triton B as small as 1 mol% is enough to finish the reaction. Aromatic, aliphatic, and {alpha},{beta}-unsaturated aldehydes as well as aldehyde hydrates and aqueous aldehydes are successfully employed.

High-mesa waveguides have been fabricated for a compact infrared sensing system, as they have a benefit of having optical evanescent field outside of their solid waveguides and thus this contributes to the sensing of gas or liquid in a compact area. Fabricated semiconductor on insulator (SOI)-based Si/SiO2 high-mesa waveguides, by using neutral loop discharge (NLD) plasma etching technique, showed extremely low propagation loss compared to those fabricated by using conventional reactive ion etching (RIE) technique. Moreover, we also demonstrate actual sensing for liquid methanol. By using 6 mm SOI-based Si/SiO2 high-mesa waveguide with waveguide width of 0.7 micro-meters, we could successfully obtain sufficient infrared absorption for the first time, therefore, this proved that the proposed waveguide had an optical field outside of the waveguide.

Sea surface dynamic height (SSDH) anomalies estimated from long-time inverted echo sounder (IES) data using gravest empirical mode method are compared with satellite altimeter data. The IES-derived SSDH anomalies agree well with the altimetric SSDH anomalies, although the IES-derived SSDH variation is slightly underestimated. We calculate power spectra of these SSDH anomalies to discuss time-scale dependency of their differences. The differences between two SSDH anomalies are found mainly caused by components with the periods from 50 days to 100 days, which correspond to meso-scale eddies or small meanders of the Kuroshio. These differences result in smaller variation of the IES-derived SSDH.
