Bill Monroe led a band called the Blue Grass Boys, but bluegrass was not invented until banjo player Earl Scruggs joined in 1945, playing his three-finger “Scruggs Style” of lightning-fast banjo. Cementing his legacy, Scruggs went on to co-lead Flatt & Scruggs and create the ultimate bluegrass instrumental, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown.” His fellow North Carolina natives George Shuffler and Bobby Hicks made important sideman contributions with acts including Stanley Brothers and Ricky Skaggs. In the modern era, Steep Canyon Rangers and Chatham County Line continue the tradition.

During the 1980s, North Carolina was a major outpost for that era’s college-radio alternative music. And Ground Zero was Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, which Mitch Easter and other major players attended. Easter and his friends Chris Stamey had been making recordings since childhood, developing studio smarts they applied to music. Working out of a garage studio in his parents’ home, Easter became one of the key producers of the decade, especially for his work with R.E.M.

During the 1990s, record companies were looking for the next big alternative rock breakout and focused a lot of attention on Chapel Hill, where bands like Superchunk, Archers of Loaf, and Polvo resided. Two Chapel Hill bands would hit it big, but they were the last two anyone would have expected -- the hot-jazz band Squirrel Nut Zippers and piano-pop trio Ben Folds Five.

Ray Charles gets credit for turning gospel into soul music in the early 1950s, but Winston-Salem’s “5” Royales beat him to the top of the R&B charts by a couple of years. The Royales were a key transitional act in soul’s evolution, with a particular gift for bawdiness. They also contributed a number of oft-covered standards, most notably “Dedicated to the One I Love.” Steve Cropper of the legendary Memphis soul combo Booker T & the MG’s has admitted that Royales guitarist Lowman Pauling was his biggest influence.

In the shadow of alternative rock, another generation went back to country music with a punk edge. In the 1990s it was called alternative country, and North Carolina had the highest and best concentration of such bands in America -- from old-timers like Red Clay Ramblers and Southern Culture on the Skids to newcomers like Backsliders and 6 String Drag. That has persisted into the present-day Americana age with bands including Hiss Golden Messenger, American Aquarium and Mandolin Orange.

This book is a love letter to the artists, scenes, and sounds defining North Carolina’s extraordinary contributions to American popular music. David Menconi spent three decades immersed in the state’s music, where traditions run deep but the energy expands in countless directions. Menconi shows how working-class roots and rebellion tie North Carolina’s Piedmont blues, jazz, and bluegrass to beach music, rock, hip-hop, and more. From mill towns and mountain coves to college-town clubs and the stage of American Idol, Blind Boy Fuller and Doc Watson to Nina Simone and Superchunk, Step It Up and Go celebrates homegrown music just as essential to the state as barbecue and basketball. Spanning a century of history from the dawn of recorded music to the present, and with sidebars and photos that help reveal the many-splendored glory of North Carolina’s sonic landscape, this is a must-read for every music lover.
Superchunk, Step It Up and Go庆祝本土音乐,就像烧烤和篮球一样对这个州至关重要。跨越一个世纪的历史,从录制音乐的黎明到现在,并与侧边栏和照片,帮助揭示许多辉煌辉煌的北卡罗莱纳州的声音景观,这是一个必读的每一个音乐爱好者。

Superchunk never hit it big, but their label Merge Records did, scoring chart-topping records and an Album Of The Year Grammy Award with Montreal’s Arcade Fire. They were just the latest and greatest label in local history, going back to Colonial Records, which released Andy Griffith’s 1953 hit routine “What It Was, Was Football.” In Durham, Sugar Hill Records became one of the top bluegrass labels in the 1980s. But while other labels came and went, Merge was the one with the most staying power of all.

In the decades after World War II, a subculture of beach music emerged in segregated, Jim Crw coastal resort towns in North and South Carolina, when vacationing white kids would sneak across the tracks to the nightclubs in the “colored” parts of town to listen to R&B songs from jukeboxes and deejays. A style of dance called “shagging” emerged to go with it, and those kids took it off to college, where a generation of R&B bands including The Drifters, The Coasters, “5” Royales and many others played the campus frat-house circuit. When those white kids started forming bands, too, The Embers emerged as the greatest of the latterday beach bands.
The Drifters, The Coasters,“5”Royales和许多其他R&B乐队在内的一代R&B乐队在校园兄弟会巡回演出。当那些白人孩子也开始组建乐队时,余烬乐队成为了当代最伟大的海滩乐队。

After forming as a beach band called Stax of Gold, Nantucket emerged as North Carolina’s top mainstream rock act of the 1970s. At a time when few acts in the state could attract the record industry, Nantucket signed to the major label Epic Records and had a good run through the 1970s and into the ’80s as a hard-working touring act. They also never completely left beach music behind, with horns and R&B a part of their sound, creating a template for North Carolina bands playing overtly mainstream music even when it was out of fashion.

Charles Cleveland “Charlie” Poole was a banjo-playing mill laborer who lived an eventful life before passing at age 39 from one alcohol binge too many. He was arguably the most important musician to emerge from the stringbands populating mill towns across the North Carolina Piedmont -- a working-class hero as well as an important crossroads figure in the 1920s evolution of old-time music into what became bluegrass and country music, recording songs that remain bluegrass-festival standards to this day. And yet he has never been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
