Telluride glass fibres for all optical switching: - nonlinear optical properties and fibre characterisation 全光开关用碲化玻璃纤维:-非线性光学特性和纤维特性

We report on the development of telluride glass fibres as a suitable medium for nonlinear optical switching at telecommunications wavelengths. Nonlinear properties of bulk TeO/sub 2/ based glasses were measured with non-resonant nonlinearities an order of magnitude greater than that of silica. Nonlinear absorption was found to be negligible. Recently, low loss single mode fibres have been drawn from the TeO/sub 2/ glass with losses approaching 1 dBm/sup -1/. A dual-channel picosecond laser system has been developed in order to demonstrate nonlinear optical Kerr switching in the fibres providing pulse widths of 20 ps at repetition rates up to 2 GHz.

Investigation of intrinsically apodised chirped fibre Bragg gratings fabricated using scanning holographic setup 扫描全息装置制备固有啁啾光纤布拉格光栅的研究

We report a novel fabrication technique for UV-inscribing chirped fibre gratings of arbitrary Bragg wavelength and intrinsic apodisation profile employing a single chirped phase-mask and a scanning Talbot interferometer set-up. Chirped gratings with bandwidth up to 5 nm have been successfully produced over a large wavelength range. Compared to gratings written by using standard fabrication methods, it has been shown that these gratings exhibit time-delay response of small ripple effect.

A high performance optical photo-polymer for planar lightwave circuits 一种用于平面光波电路的高性能光聚合物

Development of a novel multifunctional acrylate based photo-polymer formulation with T/sub g/ >150/spl deg/C and its application in the fabrication of optical waveguides is reported. Single mode planar optical waveguides were fabricated using UV exposure through a mask followed by development. Waveguide losses at 1550, 1300 and 850 nm as measured using cutback method were 0.7, 0.4 and 0.05 dB/cm respectively. Birefringence in polymer films was around 1 /spl times/ 10/sup -3/. Waveguides subjected to 85/spl deg/C, under 85% relative humidity conditions showed no deterioration or delamination.

We describe some recently developed fibre grating sensing devices (Bragg and long-period types) and applications with emphasis on simultaneous measurement of multiple measurands using combinational grating structures, and the realisation of ultra-high sensitivity sensors utilising the quadratic dispersion of long-period grating structure.

Analysis of 2D multimode interference structures 二维多模干涉结构分析

We study the image formation in a two dimensional (2D) multimode dielectric waveguide. The studied waveguide is assumed to be multimode in the two transverse directions x and y. The conditions of single and multiple image formation are developed. New types of images are also found. The obtained results are verified using a 3D finite difference beam propagation method (FDBPM) technique. Based on the developed analysis, a 2D optical power splitter is investigated.

Error sources of chromatic dispersion measurement in dispersion compensating grating 色散补偿光栅色散测量的误差来源

Describes the most important error sources in chromatic dispersion measurements on DCG (dispersion compensating grating). Laser behaviour is an important point to achieve a detailed characterization of group delay ripples. We have measured the group delay response and the existing ripple. The group delay measurements can be influenced by different factors. In our measurements we have identified six different error sources, namely thermal and shot noise, temperature, vibrations, wavelength step accuracy, laser oscillations, and modulation frequency.

Features in spectral attenuation measurement and performances of plug-in optical fixed attenuators 插入式光学固定衰减器的光谱衰减测量特点及性能

In modern optical networks the use of attenuators has grown due to the necessity of limiting in specific sections the high power transmitted. One of the main problems related to the use of this kind of components is their dependence on the wavelength, on temperature and on the input power. In this work the main features encountered in spectral attenuation measurement on connector type fixed optical attenuators are described, and a set-up for their characterization is proposed.

Refractive-index changes and long-period fiber gratings made by rapid solidification 折射率变化及快速凝固制备的长周期光纤光栅

It is shown that rapid solidification is a simple and widely applicable method to change refractive-index locally in various glass fibers. The index reduction caused by arc discharge in glass fibers is estimated at more than 0.006. Long-period gratings are written in a standard telecommunication fiber, and are not degraded by heating at 700/spl deg/C for 2 hours. Resonance wavelengths can be adjusted by heating.

Reverse proton exchange for frequency doubling in lithium niobate waveguides 铌酸锂波导中频率加倍的反向质子交换

Reverse proton exchange is a promising technique for the fabrication of nonlinear waveguides in unpoled lithium niobate (LN). We have investigated nonlinear processes in these waveguides for the frequency doubling of near infrared light at 1319 nm. After summarizing the technological processes adopted for the fabrication of planar and channel structures in z-cut LN, we report the preliminary experimental results obtained in planar waveguides, along with numerical simulations in both one- and two-dimensional geometries.
