In December, 2010 the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released a supplemental Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) as part of the Health Information Exchange (HIE) Challenge Program. The FOA encouraged "breakthrough progress for nationwide health information exchange in five challenge areas identified as key needs since Federal and State governments began implementation of the HITECH Act...Breakthrough solutions in these challenge themes will lead to the identification of more effective care delivery strategies, quality reporting, and surveillance for public health risks".

Medicaid fraud detection using data broker services
Pub Date : 2012-03-01 DOI: 10.1145/2180796.2180817

In this paper, we propose an integrated architecture to detect Medicaid fraud at the time of application approval process. This architecture takes the advantages of several public databases available through different government or private organizations. These databases are used to verify applicant's information and discover any undeclared assets. We also propose a customizable weighting scheme to determine eligibility for Medicaid services.

To encourage the delivery of high quality care with an additional emphasis on the transparency of hospital results and reporting, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Joint Commission require each hospital to submit certain inpatient core measures every quarter. In this research, we developed a system that can achieve this automatically with high accuracy for any arbitrary clinical question, in a manner that is easily user configurable/teachable.

In Japanese traditional medicine, "Monshin" plays an important role. "Monshin" is a questionnaire that asked the patient's lifestyle and subjective symptoms. Specialists decide traditional herbal medicine by using of "Monshin". In this research, we connect "Monshin" to disease through building the Network.

Addressing extensibility requirements for health informatics data

The electronic health record (EHR) is a key artifact that threads the workflow from medical encounters to resolution (treatments and claims disposition) - it aims to provide a longitudinal view into a patient's interaction with care providers within an institution to enable better and streamlined care. The EHR must front a variety of information sources which can vary and evolve over time, creating natural challenges for data representation, storage, retrieval, and information mutation. We argue that underlying data systems must store information in a flexible manner to allow EHR and other systems to insert and extract data without rigid constraints and strict or a priori defined schemas.

Supporting a healthy lifestyle by re-using personal online data

Using technology to support users in healthy living undoubtedly has a high potential. With the availability of low-cost consumer medical devices, these technologies now more and more become part of a digital lifestyle. We present a system which integrates multiple such sensors into a joint system to enable a unified view on a user's health. The acquired data will be deployed in two applications: a persuasive system to help the user maintain a healthy lifestyle, and a personal health record for long-term storage and future medical use.

Organizing RadLex lexicon for efficient retrieval of radiology documents

As more and more medical reports go online there is a move in the medical community to standardize the terminology used in these reports. The expectation is that uniformity of vocabulary can reduce variations and hence significantly aid the organization and retrieval of medical documents with modern search engines. Even medical specialties are beginning to realize the potential benefits and are getting together to develop standards for the individual specialties. In the specialty of Radiology, RadLex is the standardized lexicon developed by the Radiological Society of North America. A standardized term in RadLex is assigned one unique category from among: preferred name, synonym and abbreviation. The size of RadLex (over 12,000 terms) makes it difficult to recall a term and all its synonyms and abbreviations. From a usability perspective it is highly desirable to search with a single RadLex term and let the search engine transparently retrieve not only all the documents in which the term appears but also all the other documents created with related terms (synonyms and abbreviations) Towards that we propose an automata-based organization of RadLex lexicon to facilitate efficient retrieval of radiology documents with RadLex search terms. The automaton is used at index creation time to identify RadLex terms in a document and augment its indexes with additional terms related to those identified by the automaton. A distinguishing aspect of the approach is its computational efficiency and its broad applicability to medical Information Retrieval (IR) applications.

This paper presents a review and summary of the 2011 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC 2011). This was the second annual VAHC workshop and it was held in late October in conjunction with the IEEE VisWeek Conference. The primary goal of the VAHC workshop is to bring together researchers and clinicians to discuss the areas in healthcare that can benefit the most from advances in visualization and analytic systems. This review summarizes the event and provides information on how to access the electronic proceedings. In addition, we seek volunteers who are interested in helping to organize future VAHC workshops.

This paper presents the migration of a prehospital cardiology emergency system from a data model to multilevel modeling. The clinical concepts of data model-based system were identified and modeled according to the Multilevel Healthcare Information Modeling (MLHIM) specifications. This migration is been developed in order to provide the system with the required features of interoperability and semantic coherence.

Development of a clinical decision support system for wound management at two hospitals in Singapore

A clinical decision support system (CDSS) for wound management is being implemented at two acute care hospitals in Singapore, the Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National University Health System, in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University. Wound management is a good domain for developing a CDSS as all hospital wards handle wounds of various kinds, by nurses with different levels of expertise and experience. A hospital may have only one or two wound care specialist, and a CDSS can enable ward nurses to handle more complex wounds and relieve the workload of the wound specialist. Wound management is challenging because of the different types of wounds, the difficulty in assessing the wound condition accurately, and the plethora of wound dressings and treatment options.
