Digital badges could become a new staple to indicate skill attainment in the context of higher education. To stay relevant though, it is important that digital badges are revised regularly. We argue that this revision process might deviate from what we are used to in curriculum revision, mostly likely in terms of the required stakeholder involvement and the overall quantity of data that could be generated. We therefore advocate for the development of digital support technologies that will help to reduce the effort for all parties involved in this process and thus could foster the sustainable development of a badging ecosystem.

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is widely used in various fields and is an essential practical training for college engineering education. However, traditional PLC platform suffers from black box effect and low portability. In this study, a non-wrapped PLC laboratory kit is designed and tested for automatic control education. The laboratory kit is composed of PLC, man-machine interface, input and output elements, which are much more portable and flexible than elements of traditional PLC platform. The input elements mainly include buttons, encoder, temperature sensor, weight sensor and proximity switches, and the output elements are mainly indicator lights, lead screw slides driven by stepper motors, three-phase motor controlled by frequency converter, and electric heater controlled by solid-state relays, and servo motor. The basic practice projects, controlling practice projects, and innovative practice projects developed on the base of the laboratory kit can promote students’ practical ability and meet the teaching requirements of automatic control education. Moreover, the application of the laboratory kit could improve students’ wiring operation ability (overcoming black box effect that traditional PLC training brings), cultivate students’ design and problem-solving ability. The designed laboratory kit is intended for third-year students at Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Covid-19 has brought some revolutionary changes in Higher Education with a shift from traditional face-to-face teaching and learning to online or hybrid-based delivery. There is a strong emphasis on the integration of technology and smart platforms to deliver an effective teaching and learning environment that can withstand the unpredictable challenges of the ongoing pandemic. But many researchers have noted a lack of social interaction and motivation among students in an online setting. Also, with limited face-to-face interactions, many students had issues with collaboration and other group-based activities. Now with the availability of pre-recorded lecture videos and course materials in several universities, there is a noticeable drop in student engagement. To retain and boost students’ motivation in the current complex environment, there is an added pressure among educators to create teaching content by utilizing smart and innovative teaching approaches that are efficient and effective. Smart learning platforms might offer the potential solutions to address some of the issues with the changing landscape of teaching and learning due to the pandemic. Such platforms are versatile and therefore, can work seamlessly across in-person and virtual teaching and learning environments. They can provide an interactive platform to facilitate active learning and the quality of teamwork experience among students. The objective of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of some of the smart teaching-learning platforms used in the MSc Engineering Management programme in the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology at the University of York. A survey was conducted among the cohort from this programme in the Summer of 2021 to review their engagement and experiences with these platforms. Can such smart platforms facilitate creativity and improve teamwork ethos among students? The paper will discuss the findings of this study and also highlight if such approaches can transform the educational setting post Covid-19.

Data analysis has become one of the most important emerging fields. This is due to the wide usefulness of this discipline in improving and enhancing many other arenas. Whether in industry, commerce, economy, psychology, or education, data analysis has proven its efficiency in providing users with valuable results to increase their level of achievement. The ability to effectively manage information and extract knowledge is now seen as a key competitive advantage for organizations. [1] Valuable knowledge could easily be extracted with the use of data analysis to develop every sector of every world economy [2]. In this paper, we have combined a set of data in the educational field with some computational, statistical, or analytical techniques to draw interesting conclusions. Based on data from Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane AUI, this paper analyzes and predicts the distribution of students by schools and majors, the variance in their GPAs based on different criteria, and predicts the GPAs (Grade Point Average) of next years’ students. In this regard, the hypotheses that the study tackles as a basis for the analysis are as follows:•Students are more interested in engineering majors than social Sciences•Female students are more academically achieving compared to their male peers•Female students have better academic conduct•Next years’ students are more likely to have better average GPAs

In Japan, in the field of employment of person of with disabilities, the number of employments is increasing but still there is a problem that there are only a few employment types and industries. [1] In real time, COVID-19 infection control measures in addition to the use of ICT have accelerated new work styles. Also, 3D printers are creating new designs and manufacturing styles. [2], [3] Based on these, the purpose of this research is to develop the training materials so that person with disabilities can become operator of 3D printer and get the work. Finally, the use of it might make inclusive society. The research method is to develop training material and then conduct experiments to use it to verify the training effect. The training material is a video format consisting of slides and audio that can replay and stop by learners. Also, the training content is a basic knowledge of 3D printers and actual modeling operations. In the experiments, learners use the material and make a model and then they answered the questionnaire survey. As a result, by the cross tabulation of the frequency of reviewing the manual and the feeling about the speed of the manual was demonstrated that the speed of manual, contents and understanding of explanation are appropriate without the extreme repetition. In conclusion, it was found that manuals with video and audio were easier to understand in those icons could be shown when necessary. However, there are problems that it would not be possible to respond flexibly in the case of an operation error and in the case of lengthy process.

Nowadays, a big amount of data is collected in eLearning environments, tracking students’ behavior and their performance of learning activities. Also, a part of educational data is used by third parties for statistical or research purposes. In many cases, the datasets are transferred and processed without any techniques for students’ identity protection and there are possibilities after attacks private and sensitive data to be revealed. The aim of the paper is to present the results from conducted explorations and analysis about applying privacy preserving algorithms k-anonymity and ($varepsilon,delta$)-differential privacy on data, collected in eLearning environment. The balance between students’ privacy protection and usefulness of output information is discussed considering several privacy parameters. Machine learning is used to predict the most suitable privacy models and in this way to support the decision making of data holder/owner.

Teamwork is getting more and more popular in school. It has many advantages that are suitable for the new requirements of the schools of the 21st century and the pandemic situation caused by COVID-19. One of the main challenges of teamwork is the assessment of each individual student. It is not a good practice to assign one and the same mark to all students in the team since their contributions to the work are usually not equal. Therefore, a method for assessing the individual contribution of the students in teamwork should be developed. Such a method is discussed in the paper.

Research and practices about cybersecurity require an interdisciplinary view, necessity for more cybersecurity professionals as well as workforce with interdisciplinary knowledge. Courses with interdisciplinary themes should be developed in education institutions and interdisciplinary cybersecurity training should be organized in companies in order to avoid cyber-attacks. An interdisciplinary approach in education and training assures insight from many areas and provides a real basis for understanding cybersecurity. One important issue is the development of critical thinking skills to face the global challenges of this century, to take right decisions in everyday work and life. This paper describes shortly the importance of interdisciplinary view of cyber security and of critical thinking in education and training and gives as example the project InCyT. The team project develops and tests a digitally supported interdisciplinary training program to develop also critical thinking, a collaborative digital learning platform for small and medium sized companies (SMEs) and an adapted version for VET. SMEs in particular are objectives for criminal activities also due less knowledge about cybersecurity measures and about connections with other disciplines. SMEs resources are limited, so they need help.

Even though online learning has become the ‘new normal’ in many educational institutes around the world, its implementation is not always smooth sailing. Fully online learning often suffers from a lack of student engagement. It is therefore important for us to explore ways to alleviate student disengagement in online learning. In this study, we report the use of the goal-access-feedback-challenge-collaboration-fantasy (GAFCC-F) design model in online gamified classes. This mixed-method study examines the effects of exogenous and endogenous fantasies on student intrinsic motivation and course engagement. Study 1 was an exogenous fantasy embedded gamified online class where the plots and story have no association with the learning tasks on Moodle. Study 2 was an endogenous fantasy context where the plots could reflect the content of learning tasks. The results showed that the endogenous fantasy is more likely to improve student intrinsic motivation and course engagement than the exogenous fantasy context. Students immersed in the endogenous fantasy enjoyed doing the learning tasks more than the exogenous fantasy. Students’ perceptions of both types of fantasy were also explored.
