A novel tensor-based beamforming algorithm via multi-translation-invariant vector-sensor array is proposed. Largely different from the traditional ones, the spatial filtering is carried out on both macroscopic scale (between subarrays) and microscopic scale (between sensors of each subarray) in the new algorithm, in order to obtain the beamformer output. With different weight vectors being used in each scale, performance dominance of diverse algorithms can be combined effectively. Moreover, the contraction of covariance tensor implies smoothing operation to reduce the singularity of dual-scale covariance matrices. Consequently, the robustness of proposed algorithm to look direction and element position mismatch is increased in the case of high input-SNR (Signal-to-Noise-Ratio). Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations indicate that Dual-Scale-Combined (DSC) algorithm outperforms traditional beamformer in terms of robustness and convergence rate.

Many researchers have used varied technologies to perform the action of indoor position location tracking. In our research, we will propose methods using RFID tags to perform indoor position location tracking. First, we uses RFID to collect Received Signal Strength (RSS) from reference tags beforehand, and then uses multiple neuro networks models to do the indoor position location learning. Next, genetic algorithm is used to find the weight of each neural network. Finally, when the track tags are set up in indoor environments, they can find the position of neighboring reference tags by using the neuro networks and an arithmetic mean to calculate the position location values; with this method we are able to break figures down to track tag position locations. We conducted this experiment to prove that our methodology can provide better accuracy than the single neural network. We conducted this experiments to test the system performace and accuracy.

In this paper, we describe a visual odometry algorithm based on a novel 3D range data registration approach for mobile robot. Considering traditional range image's limited adaptability in outdoor environment representation, a Bearing Angle model is used in this paper so that local SIFT (Scale-invariant feature transform) features can be extracted and matched effectively. According to the one-to-one correspondence between Bearing Angle image and raw 3D laser data, we can obtain a group of matching pairs between any two successive laser scans, which can be used to accomplish the 3D range data registration. Compared to the conventional ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm, this approach can greatly improve the performance of scan registration both in computation time and accuracy. Furthermore, no initial rough pose estimation is needed in the registration. The frame-to-frame motion estimate can be performed by using the relative pose estimations resulting from the registration. Finally, experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed visual odometry algorithm during the wheel odometry is unavailable or GPS (Global Positioning System) signal outages.

A dynamical system-based approach to awareness is outlined. Awareness is an important component of intelligence as the system evolves through a sequence dynamical changes upon its interaction with the environment. Awareness is inherently rooted in the individual as a nonlinear system far from equilibrium. Recent cognitive experiments with spatio-temporal neurodynamics indicate large-scale intermittent synchronization-desynchronization effects as important hallmarks of awareness in biological systems. These results serve a mathematical framework to create computationally aware artificial designs.

Identifying the cleavage sites in proteins by HIV protease will greatly expedite the pace in searching for proper inhibitors of HIV protease. In this study, we focus on how many subsites are needed for predicting the cleavage sites. Using the rough set theory of information gain and reduct to search for the minimal and optimal subsites set, we found that, instead of the 8-subsite octapeptide model as usually adopted, the 6-subsite hexapeptide model would suffice to obtain equally good or even slightly better results. To verify the conclusion, prediction with the 6-subsite hexapeptide mode and the 8-subsite octapeptide model are both studied. And the predictive rate and ROC curve are also reported. Such a finding not only suggests many tedious labors could be avoided in synthesizing peptide inhibitor candidates, but also implies it would be possible to design smaller peptide drugs based on the distorted key theory.

Mental Image Directed Semantic Theory (MIDST) has proposed an omnisensory mental image model and its description language Lmd. This language can provide multimedia expressions with intermediate semantic descriptions in predicate logic. This paper describes systematic and efficient computing guided by Lmd expression and 3D map data, here so called direct knowledge of space, in cross-media operation between linguistic and pictorial expressions as spatial language understanding.

This paper presents a conceptual architecture of activity based risk analysis for monitoring the health status of the patients in their residence. By incorporating the patient records and medical domain knowledge, it will be easy to detect and prevent accidental events immediately even if the patient is not in the hospital. Data are collected using wearable sensors and transmitted to server using a smart phone through internet or mobile network. The received events are filtered, aggregated and predicted based on the concept of Situation Awareness. This gives high level information that can surpass the patient conditions. However, building this high level information is still an open challenge. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system, some application scenarios are considered.

In this paper, we propose to improve the traditional projection onto convex sets (POCS) super-resolution reconstruction (SRR) method by combining a newly-developed compressive sensing (CS) theory. This compressive sensing theory is more recently adapted to super-resolution reconstruction. The only requirement is that the image is known to be sparse, which is a specific but very general and wide-spread property of natural signal. Experimental results exhibit visible improvement on reconstructed image towards traditional POCS method.

A microphone array speech enhancement method based on blind broadband beamforming is introduced in this paper. The broadband signals are firstly divided into sub-bands in the frequency domain. Then the steering vector is then estimated by computing the singular value decomposition of the forth-order cross cumulant matrix. Finally, the sub-band speech signals are reconstructed and the corrupted speech is enhanced. Simulation results show that compared with some methods, the proposed method in the paper has good performance in the reverberation environments even without the information about direction of interest signal.

Using an acoustic vector sensor array, adaptive beamforming is addressed based on hypercomplex algebra. To utilize the minimum-variance distortionless response beamforming in the biquaternion domain, a variant of Capon beamformer named Biquaternion Capon (BQ-Capon) is proposed. Simulations show that the BQ-Capon beamformer outperforms the conventional long vector Capon beamformer with the convergence rate, and is less sensitive to the inaccuracy of the steering vector of the signal-of-interest (SOI) than the latter.
