The paper reports a study of the activity of cefotaxime and its metabolite, desacetylcefotaxime, and the association of the two compounds, against 699 strains of enterobacteria, staphylococci and Bacteroides fragilis of hospital origin. The results of the study confirm the good activity of the drug and the less satisfactory activity of its metabolite, which is nevertheless comparable to second generation cephalosporins. The 1:1 association of the two compounds showed synergism in percentages ranging from 3.7% to 15% of strains, and partial synergies of indifference to the remaining strains. Antagonisms were only observed against some M. morgani and H. alvei strains.

[In vitro antibacterial activity of neomycin, bacitracin and a combination of both]. [新霉素、杆菌肽及两者联合的体外抗菌活性]。

Bacitracin and neomycin have been used for a long time for local intestinal antisepsis or decontamination, due to their scarce or nonexistent intestinal absorption. The aim of the present study was to determine the activity of bacitracin and neomycin against recent clinical isolates of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and to verify their capacity to have a synergistic effect and to prevent the emergence of bacterial resistance when in combination. The results showed that the activity of either antibiotic against recent clinical isolates (even if resistant to cephalosporins and aminoglycosides) is similar to that originally displayed at the time introduction in therapy. Generally the combination of the two antibiotics showed a synergistic or additive effect and prevented the selection of resistant strains.

[Comparative study of the microbiological components in urinary infection (UTI)]. 尿路感染(UTI)微生物成分的比较研究

Hundred-six-fifty-one samples of urine obtained from external (460 samples) and hospitalized (191 samples) patients with suspected urinary tract infections (UTI) were analysed for bacterial flora isolation, identification of microorganisms and evaluation of their sensitivity to antimicrobial agents. 89 and 215 bacterial strains were identified in samples obtained respectively from external and hospitalized patients. E. coli was the dominant cause of community acquired UTI (68.59%), while the causative agents of UTI in hospitalized patients were Streptococcus faecalis (18.61%) and E. coli (13.96%).
