Ancient sources do not reveal a clear picture of what happened in Darius III’s last days, his killing by Persain traitors, and how Alexander seized his corpse. The usual interpretation of these facts by scholarship tends to follow the account of the sources with not much criticism on the facts. However, a close look may drive us to guess if in this concrete case we are not facing a deep misunderstanding and an interpretation graeca of a local tradition and a Persian custom. Following previous works, mainly Briant’s brilliant approaches to Achaemenid rites on Royal Funerals, the aim of this paper is to challenge the usual perception of the facts around Darius III’s death, and how the sources’ account can be reviewed in order to get a deep perspective.

To speak about Miltiades V. Hatzopoulos is to do it of one of the greatest remaining scholars not only of Alexander the Great, but also of a region of his homeland: Macedonia. This Athenian, born in 1944, is one of the last representatives of a disappearing class of researcher. His commitment to the history of his people is reflected in his articles and books, but also in his own biography. Although he has been deeply influenced by French culture, Hatzopoulos has had no homeland other than Greece. He is a clear exponent of that famous phrase of Giorgos Seferis (1900-1971): “Όπου και να ταξιδέψω η Ελλάδα με πληγώνει” (“Wherever I go Greece stabs me so”). You may or may not agree with the ideas and theories of our interviewee, but no one can deny that Miltiades V. Hatzopoulos is an essential author in our field.

Studies on the institutions of the Macedonian Koinon have expanded considerably in recent years since excavations in the region of Macedonia revealed a significant amount of numismatic and epigraphic evidence. Even though literary sources concerning the foundation and the existence of the Koinon are obscure, numismatic testimonies contributed to the institution and its role within the Macedonian territory under the Roman rule. In the current article, the “Serres, 1966” hoard is examined, which was found in 1966 and is today kept at the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum. Emphasis is given to the iconographic types and the legends, which provide valuable information regarding the institutional and cultural character of the Macedonian Koinon.
