The relation between liturgical practice and theological reflection is by no means self-evident, especially in a secularized society. How can academic theology be rooted in liturgical life, and how can liturgical involvement play a vital role in the task of theology to reflect on liturgical tradition and practice? Liturgical theology is an attempt to bridge that gap between practice and reflection. The voice of practitioners as part of theological discourse is an important ingredient for this hermeneutical dialogue. Monastic life offers a space where liturgical and theological life can meet, especially in Benedictine abbeys. There, liturgical experience (theologia prima) is directly linked to theological reflection (theologia secunda), which leads to critical impulses for both, liturgy and theology, inside and outside abbey walls. Today, monastic communities are shrinking, but there is a growing interest in liturgical life among affiliated members of abbeys: the number of Benedictine oblates are growing. What is their view on liturgical experience, reflection and criticism? In this article, I present findings from a qualitative survey among fifty-three Dutch Benedictine oblates. Their answers are analyzed by coding procedures and interpreted theologically. They form an example of liturgical theology as practice-reflection.

Worship service and life: a practical-theological exploration “Does the Sunday worship service have an impact on believers’, Christian identity and way of life?” is the main question explored in this article. Using the Grounded Theory method of empirical research, this research studied the experiences of worshippers (from three different denominations, in the East of Pretoria), with regards to the worship service and liturgical rituals. The focus was on the impact (or lack thereof) of the Sunday worship service, on the daily lives of believers. The findings of the empirical study were brought into conversation with existing literature, with the aim of realising the potential life shaping impact of the worship service. The research concluded that worshippers experienced that the worship service does indeed have an impact on the daily lives of believers, but only if the message thereof is communicated in a way that is relevant to the everyday lives of believers.

The authors of this article, two liturgical scholars and a scholar in dogmatics, engaged in a public discussion of whether or not a Holy Communion should be celebrated online. Speaking about the case afterwards, they found that both the discourse of liturgical studies and of dogmatics introduced comparable normative elements. Barnard and Klomp in liturgical studies speak with Ronald Grimes of ‘ritual criticism’ and with Roy Rappaport of ‘The True Words’ as benchmarks that are established by religions in the infinite field of meanings of the rite. Wisse speaks on the basis of the originally Lutheran distinction of Law and Gospel of therapeutic or irenic and elenctic normativity. The authors advocate this distinction as an instrument that opens the way for a discussion about the mystery of life and of the sacraments.

This study aimed to critically analyze the use of cyber cemeteries and other forms of thanatechnology (“technological resources such as videos, computer-assisted instruction programs and interactive videodiscs that can be used to gain information about topics in thanatology”, in a description by Carla Sofka) in a South African context, more specifically within the context of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC), and their potential to enrich the current and future liturgical and ritual landscape. The concept of cyber cemeteries is interpreted in a way that includes a wide variety of death, grief and bereavement online; it is not only interpreted as specific websites dedicated to reproducing physical cemeteries in online spaces. The study further aimed to critically analyze existing liturgical praxis regarding rituals and rites concerning death and view these rituals and rites from the perspective that cyber cemeteries and other forms of thanatechnology contribute to our understanding of liturgy. This thesis intended to expand the way liturgy and ritual are understood in cyberspace and attempted to broaden the liturgical imagination regarding the liturgical possibilities in a digital society. On a more specific level, this study contributes to enhancing the cultural relevance of existing Reformed thanatological liturgical praxis, and the role of technology in participants’ lives.

The Dutch poet, minister and essayist Willem Barnard (1920–2010) greatly contributed to the artistic and theological exploration of fundamental questions on sacramentality. This article concentrates on the way Barnard addresses the paradox that sacraments are human acts. It starts out from his explorations of religious drama and argues that they are in Barnards works a key to a sacramentality, in particular of the Eucharist, that is intentionally performed, embodied and experienced. Central to Barnards explorations and a stimulus for his further theological reflection is the establishment of a ‘sacramental lab’ in the 1950’s (‘Nocturnen’). Barnard thus develops a concept of liturgy as ‘drama’ that includes theological reflection on ‘community’, ‘participation’ and the making of liturgical rituals. Moreover, the artistic perspective of drama enables him to thematize both the continuity and discontinuity between God’s acts and human acts.

In this article, I present a project that recently emerged at the Protestant Theological University (PThU: NL Amsterdam-Groningen). It focuses on the classical reformed liturgy in the Netherlands, its texts, rituals and their history, especially in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The collection of these texts, passed on through generations, is known as, among others, The Liturgy. I demonstrate it has been observed since the middle of the 17th century that The Liturgy is not a collection of prayers and forms of which the extent and the texts can be clearly defined. Still, a critical edition of The Liturgy has not yet been produced. I argue that a critical edition with attention to its origins, its various releases, its reception in the Netherlands Reformed Church and its effects on other liturgies is needed for an in-depth study of the history of both the reformation period and the reformed liturgy. Subsequently, I outline the method to produce such an edition. Because of the complexity of the matter, each part – for example a form or a collection of prayers – needs to be studied separately. Nevertheless, for each part similar steps have to be taken in which the involved scholars can work together. The critical edition of a part can be published in its own right. The final result is a merging of the releases into a critical edition of The Liturgy as a whole.
