Based on the concepts of modernity of the public space,of liberal exileand Hispanic American experience, the present article intends to examine Cipriano Barata's and Frei Caneca's transcripts in Correio do Rio de Janeiro,in 1823, while its editor João Soares Lisboa was in prison for beingaccused of “colluding with Republicans”. These editions discussed civic virtues, the Emperor's morality, and the idealization of what Soares Lisboa called a “Monarchical-Democratic” government and disseminated, in the Court, the ruling centerof the Empire, a project forBrazil that foughtthe Upper House and defended provincial autonomy in a federal arrangement, with broad citizen participation in government, formation of militias and restrictionofthe monarch’s powers.

Two years after Brazil's independence,and in the period following the war that broke out in the context of Brazilian political emancipation, diplomats from the Empire of Brazil and the Kingdom of Portugal, supported by the mediation of the Austrians and the English, began conversations, in 1824, which aimed to carry outan act of reconciliation between Brazil and Portugal regardingthe recognition by Portugal of Brazilian sovereignty. In this article, bibliography and various documentation, namely official, are used to clarify thecontext of Brazil’s independence, as well as to analyze itsobject of study: the Protocol of Conferences and the Treaty of Peace and Alliance between Brazil and Portugal, a legal instrument through which Portugal recognized the Independence of Brazil. Therefore, the content transcribed in the aforementioned documents, inserted in the time frame between the years 1824and 1825, is analyzed. A certain neutrality of the Austrian delegation during the negotiationswas revealed, in contrast to the commitment ofthe English delegation to an agreement between Brazil and Portugal. It was established that,despite the dispute over the authority of D. Pedro I and his title of Emperor of Brazil, and the high degree of disagreement between the negotiators of Brazil andPortugal, the negotiations were finally crowned with success in 1825, with the Treaty of Peace and Alliance and the Recognition by Portugal of Brazilian sovereignty.

This study is the result of the research work developed under two stages carried out in the North Regional Directorate of Culture, one in 2012/2013 and another in 2017. We had the opportunity to analyse "old book" units that are part of the library of the extinct Museum of Ethnography and History of Douro-Litoral, which is currently in the Palace of the Viscount of Vilar de Allen, commonly known forCasa de Allen. We intend to disclose the existence of this bibliographic heritage and describe some of its characteristics, trying to understand its insertion and relationship with the old museum.

Esta e uma das questoes centrais que Giovanni Ceccarelli explora no seu livro Risky Markets. Marine Insurance in Renaissance Florence, que foi publicado na sua traducao inglesa pela Brill, em 2021 (a versao original, em italiano, e de 2012). Uma das suas principais conclusoes e que a estrutura organizativa do mercado de seguros florentino emergiu pela iniciativa privada de um pequeno grupo de individuos que, com base nas suas relacoes de confianca e codigos de conduta comuns, garantiu o funcionamento de um sistema de protecao da atividade mercantil, que se manteve fora de enquadramentos institucionais. Ceccarelli argumenta que existiu uma “intervencao normativa minima” no mercado florentino, por ser assente em relacoes diretas entre segurador e subscritor, oposta aos contratos celebrados perante um notario, que requeriam uma “intervencao normativa significativa”. Embora inserido no grande esquema da New Institutional Economics, este livro desafia os debates em curso ao identificar o que podera ser uma “evidente contradicao entre os academicos que insistem na ligacao entre instituicoes e funcionamento de mercado”. In the middle of the 16thcentury, Doutor João de Barros wrote Geographia d'Entre Douro e Minho e Tras-os-Montes,a book that represented an important geographic and chorographic account of those regions, with interesting details that include not only urban and architectural descriptions, but also elements related to economic activities, social relationships, devotions,and legends, among many others. The city of Porto stands out for the detailed descriptionin this book, recently republished. The analysis ofother contemporarysources and recent historiographic studies will enlighten us about the historical rigor of this 16thcentury account

This study focuses on the inquisitorial processes of ten new Crypto-Jewish women convicted by the Court of the Holy Office of Lisbon between 1662 and 1694. The analysis of this documentary is essential to understand the institution's position in these cases, revealing the crypto-Jewish practices that ledtothe condemnation of the crypto-Jewish women. In addition, the documentationshow strategies of personal resistanceand community protection inCourt.Women individual inventories of goods will also be considered in this analysis, related with their wealthand religious beliefs.

The student movement was a central element in the resistance to Europe's longest dictatorship in the 20th century,and had expression in all academies, including at the University of Porto. The present work seeks to reconstruct theaction, albeit partially, of students of the Faculty of Medicine of Porto, between 1969 and 1974. For this purpose, written documents produced by the student representative structuresare analyzed. There is a great intensity in the activity of the student movement in the period under study, with the development of significativestruggles aboutpedagogical issues and articulated with the more general struggle against repression and dictatorship
