Wireless cable, including MMDS, ITFS, and MDS, is a terrestrial television broadcast service at 2.1 and 2.5 to 2.7 GHz. A total of 33 channels are available, each 6 MHz wide. By utilizing MPEG2 video compression and spectrally efficient digital modulation, the number of programs delivered in this bandwidth can be dramatically increased. This paper describes the method by which the programming increase is achieved. The resulting increase in spectral efficiency does come at the cost of increased stringency in transmitter specifications. This paper describes the new digital MMDS transmitter specifications and the technology that allows these tighter specifications to be met.

The paper shows the design of a 2 Mb/s wireless IR experimental modem using DPSK modulation. This modem is suitable for LAN and data communications in office environments using both diffuse and quasidiffuse IR beams. The paper focuses on optical transmitter and receiver design, due to the optical power and sensitivity limitations in such links.

Balanced gamma (BG) networks, which are based on 4/spl times/4 switching elements (SEs), the 2-replicated 2-dilated banyan networks and the batcher banyan networks have comparable hardware complexity. This paper studies the performance of MINs under bursty traffic type. It is shown that the performance of the BG network under bursty traffic is better than that of the 2-replicated 2-dilated banyan network and the batcher banyan network.

Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., has set up a laboratory to test conformance of consumer electronics equipment with the MPEG-2 standard. This paper discusses some MPEG background and initial MPEG-2 conformance testing for interoperability at CableLabs' testing laboratory. The methodology for performing encoder/decoder compliance testing is explained. Software and hardware platforms to support MPEG-2 bitstream interoperability presented.

There are limitations in the usability of the World Wide Web. One approach to circumventing these limitations involves inserting high-level transducers in the HTTP request/response stream. A second approach involves building more independent programs, called browsing associates. We have built example services and toolkits for both.

This paper presents an overview of the KNOWS client server system. The system is capable of cataloging individual World Wide Web servers, and building master subject catalogs of server content across the Web. Users are provided with a set of graphical tools that allow descriptions of files and directories to be built. Cataloging occurs through user interactions with this interface. The system's communication algorithm creates a semi-reliable circular connection path through groups of servers. The client server program is described. The salient features of the system that allow cataloging to occur are described. The communication algorithms being implemented for the Internet are described.

The article examines the possibility of using Vendor Independent Network Control Entity (VINCE) software development environment to demonstrate how operations administration and maintenance (OAM) functions would be carried out for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. The results of a cell transfer delay prototype show VINCE could be extended to support OAM.

A new multicast routing algorithm for reducing congestion is presented. The algorithm uses efficient routing by transmitting multicast packets across fewer links in the network. The algorithm balances the use of network nodes and links by reducing packet duplication in the nodes. The computation time of the algorithm is short. The results show that the algorithm can find the multicast paths by using the minimum number of links and reduce congestion.

The 64/spl times/64 QuickRing ATM switch is a multi-stage switch constructed from 8/spl times/8 QuickRing ATM switches. The buffering requirements of such a switch must be carefully considered in the design. Under both Poisson and bursty traffic, the buffer space needed at an intermediate node is less than one-third of the buffer space needed at an output node.

Two kinds of multimedia conferencing bridging systems are examined: peer-to-peer and network-based bridging architecture. The investigation shows that the network-based system outperforms the peer-to-peer architecture in saving the bandwidth in the access link as well as within the network especially for audio and video. However, peer-to-peer bridging appears to be optimal for data.
