The aim of this study was to explore how the use of biographical interviewing can work as a learning method in teacher education. The notion of biographical learning usually refers to the learning potential of autobiographical storytelling, i.e. learning from one’s own life. However, in this study we were intrigued by learning from other people’s life stories, which we call here “biographically-oriented learning”. Student teachers conducted biographical interviews as part of the course “Arts and skills in education 1”. Student teachers interviewed teachers who generally teach arts and skills, i.e. music, physical education, arts and/or crafts. The specific research questions of this study were: (1) What are student teachers’ perceptions of a biographical interview? (2) Does a biographical interviewing method foster reflective learning? The data comprised reflective essays on teacher education (in portfolios) by student teachers (N=97) at the University of Eastern Finland in 2015. The approach to the data analysis was both inductive and deductive. The findings suggest that student teachers’ perceptions of biographical interviews were positive. It was also found that a biographical interviewing method specifically supported dialogic and descriptive reflection. Biographical interviewing as a learning tool can support a movement from passive to more active learning.

This study investigated the mental health status of the undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and examined the types of social support experienced by undergraduate students. It also investigated the relationship between social support and mental health status of the undergraduate students. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population for the study consisted of 26,382 undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo Universities in Ile-Ife. The sample comprised 900 undergraduate students selected using a multistage sampling technique. Six faculties were selected from the 13 faculties in the University using simple random sampling technique. A total of 150 students was selected from the three departments using systematic random sampling technique. Two instruments, titled Mental Health Status Scale (MHSS), Social Support Scale (SSS) were used to elicit information from the respondents. Percentages, Frequency counts and Point Biserial Correlation were employed to analyze the data. The results showed that 14.9%, 68.6% and 16.4% of undergraduates of Obafemi Awolowo Universities, Ile-Ife demonstrated low, moderate and high mental health status respectively. The results also showed that family and friends support were the most common types of social support experienced by undergraduates with 96.1% and 71.4% respectively. Finally, the results of the study showed that there was a significant relationship between social support and mental health status (N=845, rpb= 0.327, p< 0.05). It was concluded that social support was a good correlate of mental health status among undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo Universities, Ile-Ife.

The study examined the perception of Civic Education teachers on Civic competence of senior secondary school students. It also examined teachers’ perception towards Civic competence of senior secondary school students. It further determined the difference in teachers’ perception and attitude on civic competence of senior secondary school students based on gender. The study adopted survey research design. Teachers of Civic Education in senior secondary schools in Osun State constituted the population for the study. Three hundred (300) teachers constituted the sample size for the study using multi-stage sampling procedure and simple random sampling techniques. An instrument titled: ‘Perception and Attitude of Teachers on Civic Competence Questionnaire’ (PATCCQ) was used for data collection. Two research questions and two hypotheses emanated from the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, simple percentages and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The results among others showed that majority of the teachers (67.0%) had positive attitude towards civic competence of their students. Also, there was a significant difference in teachers’ perception on civic competence of senior secondary school students based on gender (F = 8.725, p<0.05) and religion (F = 2.739, p<0.05) respectively. The study concluded that teachers have good perception and positive attitude towards civic competence of senior secondary school students in the study area in Osun State.

The Item Response Theory (IRT) examines how testees at different ability levels respond to an item. The theory assumes that latent traits that are fewer in number than the test items account for responses to the items. This study validated the test construction skills inventory through the lens of IRT. Also, the study assessed teachers’ level of skills in test construction. The descriptive survey design was employed for the study. Using the cluster sampling, 583 senior high school teachers in the Cape Coast Metropolis were engaged in the study. The 3-parameter logistic model (3-PLM) through the IRTPRO software was used to validate the test construction skills inventory. Eighteen out of 25 items were deemed valid and used to assess teachers’ skills in test construction. It was found that the majority of the teachers had higher skills in test construction. Recommendations were made to the Ministry of Education, Ghana (MoE), Ghana Education Service (GES), and heads of the various SHSs in the Cape Coast Metropolis.

The aim of this paper is to study three roles of Universities in the management of educational services at the lectures. This is a very important aim, as students' requests change. That is why Universities are forced to manage educational services. The following research methods were used in this study: empirical methods (the study of normative legal acts and scientific-methodological literature; content analysis of scientific sources for higher education); methods of theoretical analysis (classification; induction and deduction; comparative and retrospective ones; specification and generalization); graphical methods for data analysis of research. The theoretical and practical relevance of the review deals with marketing management. It has got new scientific results. It is three roles of Universities in the management of educational services at the lectures: as performers of educational services; as educational institutions; as marketing-oriented institutions. The proposed set of managerial decisions for three roles of Universities in the management of educational services at the lectures improves the quality of specialist training in higher education.
