Biofeedback is a technique that teaches a user to control physiological signals by using mental processes. It has been used to treat mental and physical disorders such as stress, anxiety, diabetes, hypertension, headache, Raynaud's syndrome and other health problems. Biofeedback has conventionally been used at the office of the therapist. Mobile biofeedback may improve the outcomes as there would not be restrictions of place and time. The acquisition board is based on the open hardware Arduino and communicated by Bluetooth to the cellular phone which was programmed to implement thermal and electrodermal response (EDR) biofeedback. Five participants were part of this study, they were able to increase the temperature of the index finger and increase EDR levels using the equipment. Both techniques of biofeedback showed to decrease anxiety and stress greater than doing a relaxing activity. Stress levels were assessed by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire used to record stress and anxiety traits. This study suggests that biofeedback might be implemented on mobile devices as a therapeutic tool for stress and anxiety.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of global death. The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most widely adopted tool that measures the electrical activities of the heart from the body surface. However, heart rhythm irregularities and other heat attack problems cannot always be detected on a standard resting ECG machine, since they may not occur during an individual's recording session. Common Holter-based portable ECG detection systems lack the capability to provide real-time feedback and has allergic and discomfort problems cased by wet Ag/AgCl electrodes. In this paper, we seek to establish a cell phone-based real-time monitoring system for CVD. To improve the comfort during long term ECG monitoring, a noncontact ECG detection system based on capacitive coupling was designed, fabricated and tested. Capacitive sensing of ECG allows unobtrusively monitoring of the heart, thus has a lot of advantage over the conventional wet Ag/AgCl electrodes, such as zero preparation time, insensitive to skin conditions and has the potential to be embedded in the clothes etc.

Adopting e-health technologies may be one of the ways to ease the burden of hospitals, where nurses and doctors may be deployed more efficiently to ensure better patient-centered care. The adoption of e-health not only depends on the government, industry players and the current state of technology. Part of the successful adoption also relies on the users' need for it and their attitude towards using e-health in their daily routine. In this paper, we will share the qualitative research findings of 30 participants (10 families). The findings are based on in-depth interviews in users' homes. With these, the Human Factors team hopes to bridge the gaps between three-generation families' (youth, adult, elderly) needs and attitudes towards e-health technologies. This is in view of having designers, researchers and engineers to develop e-health technologies that would be used and adopted by users (three-generation families) in their daily routine.

Video self-modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of him- or herself. In the field of speech language pathology, the approach of VSM has been successfully used for treatment of language in children with Autism and in individuals with fluency disorder of stuttering. Technical challenges remain in creating VSM contents that depict previously unseen behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel system that synthesizes new video sequences for VSM treatment of patients with voice disorders. Starting with a video recording of a voice-disorder patient, the proposed system replaces the coarse speech with a clean, healthier speech that bears resemblance to the patient's original voice. The replacement speech is synthesized using either a text-to-speech engine or selecting from a database of clean speeches based on a voice similarity metric. To realign the replacement speech with the original video, a novel audiovisual algorithm that combines audio segmentation with lip-state detection is proposed to identify corresponding time markers in the audio and video tracks. Lip synchronization is then accomplished by using an adaptive video re-sampling scheme that minimizes the amount of motion jitter and preserves the spatial sharpness. Experimental evaluations on a dataset with 31 subjects demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Key decisions at the collection, pre-processing, transformation, mining and interpretation phase of any knowledge discovery from database (KDD) process depend heavily on assumptions and theoretical perspectives relating to the type of task to be performed and characteristics of data sourced. In this article, we compare and contrast theoretical perspectives and assumptions taken in data mining exercises in the legal domain with those adopted in data mining in TCM and allopathic medicine. The juxtaposition results in insights for the application of KDD for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Early detection of onset and outbreak of infectious diseases has paramount importance in containing such diseases before they turn into epidemics. The incredible growth in popularity and spatial resolution of coverage have made micro-blogging sites like Twitter a promising source of information for assessing the evolution of intensity of such diseases within a locality. However, identifying tweets with self-reported illness from other `disease related' tweets is important for avoiding false alarms. In this research, our endeavor is to segregate the tweets all of which fall under the general category of `disease related'. By using relatively very small training set and modifying the conventional n-gram feature selection method, we could isolate tweets reporting individual's illness with around 88.7% precision.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is developed from clinical practice. Rich information can be obtained from the medical record of TCM. National clinical research data center of TCM is constructed to collect the clinical medical data of TCM from hospitals all over the country. The construction framework of national clinical data center of TCM includes infrastructure construction, software construction, local branch data center construction and institutional framework. In the mean time, a series of measures is implemented to guarantee the normal running of the national clinical data center of TCM. The construction of national clinical data center of TCM may promote the development of TCM and improve the level of medical care in China.

Exercise the brain and perform physical activities slow cognitive impairment and help optimize brain functions, especially memory and thinking. This tool focuses on therapeutic aspects of both cognitive and physical stimulation of the elderly, that is, it improves the memory by performing mental activities and physical exercise at the same time. To achieve this, a Kinect based Windows application has been developed intended specifically to improve the language area of the brain function. While performing mental activities the user must resolve them by doing various physical motions. KiMentia uses skeletal tracking to capture the body movements, enabling users to control and interact with the computer without any intermediary controller. Furthermore, all the data generated during the session is stored in order to log every rehabilitation activity. Preliminary tests have shown an increase in the users' motivation while using the tool forgetting that it focuses on the cognitive stimulation. In a future research, the results from a long period study will be reported describing the cognitive performance of the patients.

A novel experimental setup using accelerometer and gyroscope sensors embedded on a single board along with a distance-based pattern recognition algorithm is presented for accurately identifying basic movements for possible application in gaming using a mobile platform. As an example, we considered some basic step sequences in the popular dance game (e.g., dance dance revolution), and could detect these movements with a reasonably high probability. We envision that the experimental results presented in this paper will motivate future research in the world of mobile gaming applications using advanced smart phones with a dual module design. It is remarked that the same technology may be used to help the elderly stay at home. This technology can be applied to track and monitor the movements of elderly people to guarantee they are getting up, to detect falls, or to monitor electric wheel chairs so that they may go outside alone thereby assisting the elderly while they live independently in their own homes where they feel safe.
