ABSTRACT Fish are a prominent source of nutrients, yet in the southern Levant, clear evidence for fishing was scarce before the historic periods. In the current paper, we present the evidence for Natufian (ca. 15,000–11,700 cal BP) fishing with an emphasis on fishhooks, representing one of the best examples of an artefact that reached its morphological optimum thousands of years ago and continued to be widely used today. While fishing using various techniques and implements was probably in use well before the Natufian, this innovation seems to represent a new technique, more restricted and controlled, for obtaining this food source.

ABSTRACT The excavation of Warwick, an early 17th-century English ship wrecked in a hurricane, yielded more than 2,000 individual cultural objects, the largest and most significant being the articulated remains of the starboard section of the hull. This article details the objects salvaged and excavated from the site prior to 2008 and presents an overview of selected artefacts recovered during 2010–12 excavations by the authors. The objects included in this catalog are those that have been analyzed, already conserved, or are currently in various stages of conservation.

: Geologically, the city of Bandung is built on a former large lake known as the Ancient Bandung Lake and when the water recedes it forms a topography in the form of a basin known as the Bandung Basin. The interesting thing is that when the Dutch East Indies Colonial government built Jalan Raya Pos and office buildings they tended to choose the northern part of the basin over the southern part. This study aims to determine the pattern of distribution of office buildings along Jalan Raya Pos during the Dutch East Indies Colonial era and review geological factors that influenced it. This research was conducted by studying the distribution pattern of the building through the nearest neighbor analysis method and its location from Jalan Raya Pos and the geological map of the Bandung Basin. The results of this study show that office buildings built during the Dutch East Indies Colonial were dominantly concentrated in the northern part of Jalan Raya Pos which were randomly distributed, located in the northern part of the Bandung Basin with an altitude between 704 – 725 m sea level, dry plains, and stable soil conditions with topography relatively flat. Meanwhile, in the southern part, the topography continues to decline until the bottom of the Basin which has an average elevation of 600 m sea level. The main rocks in the northern part of the Bandung Basin are volcanic products, while the southern part is lake deposits so the soil surface in the southern part has a wetter and unstable condition because the constituent rocks are the clay. This also has implications for the available groundwater potential, in the northern part relatively having a character with much better quantity and quality than the southern part. This condition made the Dutch East Indies Colonial government prefer the north side of Jalan Raya Pos and the northern part of Bandung Basin in constructing office buildings which are randomly distributed more in the north of Jalan Raya Pos, which is 87%, while in the south 13% in the period from 1810 – 1940.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a five-year project, ‘Underwater Archaeological Chart of the Azores’, which ran from 2004 to 2009 and has not been published previously. This project involved systematic surveys under the responsibility of the Government of the Azores, which undertook its task as the public entity responsible for archaeological heritage. To understand this project, it's necessary to provide a framework for all previous projects. In order to contextualize the results of the underwater archaeological programme it's also important to consider the principles of UNESCO, which guide the normative framework that takes into account the importance of protection, research and enjoyment of underwater cultural heritage.

ABSTRACT In December 2017, archaeologists from the State Service for Culture and Monuments in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania, Germany, excavated the remains of a clinker-built cargo vessel in the seaport of Wismar, one of three medieval shipwrecks found during the extension of the port. With riveted outer planking and the presence of bitis, the wreck can be placed in the Nordic clinker shipbuilding tradition. It was built from oak and pine sourced from western Sweden in the period AD 1184–90. The construction shows striking similarities with a number of large 12th-century AD cargo vessels found in northern Germany and Scandinavia.

ABSTRACT This article presents the timber marks found on one of the Ses Llumetes shipwreck’s frames (1st century AD; Mallorca, Spain). From this find, a review over time of this type of archaeological evidence is developed, comparing the use, meaning and interpretations in the different comparative contexts found in the Mediterranean. Timber marks on vessels are particularly rare to find in underwater archaeological context, especially for the Roman Period. This makes the discovery of the Ses Llumetes shipwreck an important contribution to the existing examples. The location of a mark in a specific location in a vessel can mean that its interpretation can vary, and also shows relevant details about the people behind this action. In particular, the analysis of the tria nomina represented by the Ses Llumetes mark has proved to be especially important for investigating where the ship might have been built.
