This phenomenological study focused on understanding Unreached People Groups (UPGs) lived experiences to model a Pentecostal mission strategy. The global discussion and attention on the UPGs ignited at the 1974 Lausanne Congress and it has altered the global understanding of mission. In recent times, people’s group thinking represents a predominant pattern in global missions. Nonetheless, few scholarly works have been conducted to carefully examine UPG’s questionable theological and socio-cultural underlying assumptions and consequently, Christian institutions and missionaries are less prepared to reach out. This study directed by the Pentecost Centre for the Study of Unreached People Groups (PCUPGs) at the Pentecost University, Ghana critically re-evaluated the concept using biblical and sociocultural analysis to assess the Biblical and Conceptual basis of UPGs. The study from theological and socio-cultural perspectives developed missional strategies towards reaching the unreached people groups in Africa in fulfillment of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, to disciple all Ethnic Groups and consequently, redefine the term “UPGs” which is a seminal contribution to scholarship. The study contributes to academia by assessing the theological and conceptual basis of the UPGs towards developing pragmatic missional strategies to overcome the contemporary mission challenges, as well as initiate a Pentecostal approach to missions amongst the UPGs in Africa. Keywords: Unreached People Groups, Great Commission, ethnic groups, socio-cultural assumptions, and missional strategies

The Church’s place in modern life has gone a lot beyond its original purpose of giving spiritual advice through religious groups. Through participant observation and a review of the literature, this paper examined how the Church, especially The Church of Pentecost (CoP), has changed over time in modern Ghana to promote patriotism and instil moral values in modern Ghana through its two flagship programmes—“National Development Conference 2023” and the “All Ministers Conference 2023”. The findings of the research revealed that morals, unity, and national growth were emphasised at these conferences. There were teachings, prayers, workshops, and the raising of the Ghanaian flag as a symbol of how important it is to work together across party lines for national growth. The study highlighted key recommendations, including employing a holistic approach, promoting patriotic songs, fostering collaboration, upholding moral values, emphasizing the national flag, and transcending partisanship. The study concluded that media influence, equality, punctuality, and unity are essential in fostering patriotism and moral values for Ghana’s growth and development. The paper contributes to the proactive role of the church in nurturing patriotism and moral values, providing valuable insights into nation-building and societal cohesion. Keywords: The Church of Pentecost, Religion, Patriotism, Moral Values, National Development

The portrayal of God in the Old Testament differs from that in the New Testament, suggesting an evolving perception and understanding over time. This has led to confusion and a dualistic view of God among individuals throughout history. Particularly perplexing is the divine sanction for the complete annihilation of the Canaanite population, seemingly contradicting God’s just nature. This study investigates the command to exterminate men, women, children, and infants belonging to the Canaanite nations and seeks to reconcile the notion of a just God sanctioning such perceived cruelty and bias. Analyzing the moral, religious, and theological complexities surrounding this issue, the study aims to shed light on the hypothetical inconsistency in God’s attitude. Ultimately, the study asserts that God’s sanctioned killings were justifiable actions driven by His foreknowledge and intended for the salvation of humanity as a whole. However, the study emphasizes that this divine approach does not justify or endorse any contemporary acts of religious extremism, as such violence serves no salvific purpose in God’s current plan for humanity. Grounded in the principles of action, consequence, and responsibility, the Pentecostal theodicy explored in this qualitative investigation, based on literature review and textual analysis, provides insights into the academic question of why a just God would command the total obliteration of the Canaanites. Through this analysis, this study contributes to the advancement of knowledge on the topic. Keywords: Pentecostal Theodicy, Justice, Canaanites, Violence, Extremism, and Biblical text.

The article examined the influence of the Ghanaian primal consciousness on Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity. Although the primal religion seems to have lost its physical presence in the Ghanaian religious space, its ideologies and tenets continue to be alive in the lives of many Pentecostal-Charismatic Christians. Relying on the researcher’s pastoral experience, personal observations and by paying attention to some sayings and proverbs of some Pentecostals, the study identified the extent to which primal consciousness affects Pentecostal Christianity in Ghana. It discovered that while some elements of the primal religion are closely related to Christianity and may thus positively affect it, others appear to be in opposition to biblical truth and may thus affect it negatively. The study posits that a good knowledge of the reality of the effect of the primal consciousness by Pentecostal-Charismatic churches would advance the Christian mission in Africa. The article adds to existing literature on the impact of the primal religion on Christianity. Keywords: Primal consciousness, Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, Ghana, religion.

The influence of Pentecostalism as a global religious culture is obvious in almost every sphere of human endeavour. As a Christian religious category, Pentecostalism permeates virtually all dimensions of Christian faith and practice. In spite of the visibility and vociferous presence of Pentecostalism as a worldwide Christian religious culture, its influence on Christians’ visitation to Prayer Mountains (PMs) and the pilgrims’ devotion to holiness ethics appear not to have been traversed in scholarship. This paper attempts to fill this gap by employing a multidisciplinary approach to gather the relevant field data. The discussion is theoretically anchored on Miroslav Volf’s ‘The Christian Faith as a Prophetic Religion.’ Using this theory as a hermeneutical framework of the influence of pilgrimage to PMs on society, the paper discloses, among others, that Ghanaian Christians’ pilgrimage to PMs and the pilgrims’ adherence to holiness ethics are replications of Pentecostal practices. Keywords: Pentecostalism, pilgrimage, Abasua Prayer Mountain, holiness ethics

The Place of Public Theology in the Relationship between the Church and Traditional Leaders Toward the Social Development of Ghana

The article affirms that there is a need for collaboration between the church and traditional leaders for the relevant strength for the promotion of social development. This collaboration the study argues, must be guided by Public Theology. Public Theology promotes moral values and a holistic approach to social development that takes into account not only economic growth but also social and moral considerations. By working collaboratively and drawing on their respective strengths, public theologians and traditional leaders can help to build a more just and inclusive community and contribute to a more prosperous future for all Ghanaians. The examination which was done with library research and interviews affirms existing relationships between the church and traditional leaders. To attain the relevant strength from the collaboration for social development the study recommends that Public Theology must provide the values and moral compass for the process towards the contribution of the two significant institutions to social development in Ghana. Keywords: Public Theology, African Christianity, Traditional Leadership, Social Development

An Examination of the Role of the Holy Spirit in the Ministry of Jesus in Luke 4:18-19 with an Emphasis on Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches in Ghana

It is important to state that many Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians in Ghana are confounded by why Jesus in his capacity as God would need the empowerment of the Spirit in his earthly ministry. This presupposes that God sent him for a purpose and he needed divine approval and empowerment in order to carry out that purpose. Jesus sets the stage for today’s Christians and ministers of the gospel to acknowledge the fact that fulfilling a God-given task depends on how one aligns with the Spirit of the Lord. The emphasis on the anointing of kings, priests, and prophets in the Old Testament to carry out their individual assignments is an important theology that Luke also affirms in his narrative in Luke 4:18-19. This paper contends that the Holy Spirit in the ministry of Jesus is a vital theological element to be considered especially at the time when many who claim to be prophets and messengers of God are exhibiting various spiritual dynamics. The paper concludes that understanding the Holy Spirit in the ministry of Jesus is critical to shaping the perspective of Christian ministers today. Keywords: Pentecostal/Charismatic Churches in Ghana, Holy Spirit, Jesus’ Ministry, Anointing.

This paper tries to demonstrate that Christian prophetism is vital in fulfilling the mandate of the Great Commission. It employs both hermeneutical, descriptive, and analytical methods of doing constructive theology. It points out that prophetism is a creative work of God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Nonetheless, accompanying the creative and redemptive acts of prophetism is the tendency for it to attract or degenerate into such things as conflict, abuse, and unethical actions. The paper shows that both elements of creativity and degeneration could be traced to Ghanaian prophetism. Moreover, it advocates that proper theological education and law enforcement among others regarding prophetism could minimize the degeneration of prophetism for the rapid growth and expansion of Christian mission in Ghana. Keywords: Prophetism, Prophetic Ministry, Church, Christianity

All religions and or denominations, among other things, seek to provide answers to life-threatening conditions facing their adherents. One of them is the concept of salvation. This paper examines the concept of salvation among Pentecostals/Charismatics in Ghana. Using interviews and secondary materials from some Pentecostal/Charismatic practitioners and scholars, it was identified that salvation is a state that affirms that the soul of an individual is saved from destruction by believing in the atoning works of Jesus Christ. This is received by confessing Jesus Christ as one’s Lord and personal saviour. This makes the believer become like a “spiritual Israelite” who is able to access the promises of God in both the Old and New Testaments in the here and now as well as in the life hereafter. Additionally, receiving salvation gives believers victory over the influence of evil spiritual forces. There are, however, impediments to the progress of the believer which are classified as “spiritual” and “physical” enemies. Notwithstanding, believers are able to overcome these obstacles when they remain students of the word of God and become prayerful. This ensures their continued enjoyment of the blessings of God in the here and now as well as in the life hereafter. The paper recommends that all religions and/or denominations should take a quick look at what constitutes salvation and its implications because it is a meaningful human concern. Additionally, obstacles to salvation should be highlighted along with strategies for overcoming them for believers in the here and now and the hereafter. The study has added to the body of information about the doctrine of salvation from the Pentecostals/Charismatics perspective. Keywords: Salvation, Pentecostals, Charismatics, Ghana

The event of Pentecost in the book of Acts can be viewed as a continuation of the salvation drama initiated by God; it has some connection with the Jewish feast of Shavuot and the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. The event is generally understood as the Holy Spirit’s outpouring and has great significance for the Christian mission. By means of the literary qualitative research method, this paper defines the Christian mission and traces the event of Pentecost from the Holy Spirit’s missional work in the Old Testament, emphasizing the significance of the outpouring in Acts for Christian Mission in Evangelism, Leadership, Character Transformation and Cross-cultural mission. Using the church of Pentecost as an example, the paper concludes that the incident of Pentecost is most significant in the growth of Pentecostal Movements. In addition to the Holy Spirit’s work, good education, proper planning and good mission strategies are recommended for effective Christian Mission. Keywords: Pentecost, Christian Mission, Holy Spirit, Cross-cultural mission
