Social work instructors often assist students with writing; through a framework of project-based learning (PBL), they can apply a systematic approach to foster effective writing skills in undergraduate social work students. PBL guides students to identify and strengthen their writing skills so they can fill gaps that would otherwise inhibit their achievement. This article explores the planning, preparation, and implementation of two student projects that build writing proficiency using PBL. Strategies to assist developing writers are described, including viewing writing projects as a process, reducing student anxiety about writing, reducing plagiarism, and improving self-reflection on written documents.

Military social work as a field of practice is growing to meet the educational mandate to adequately prepare social workers to provide an array of services to service personnel and their families. A theoretical orientation that honors the intersection of the warrior ethos, resiliency and protective factors, and social work ecological and strengths perspectives is presented. A case vignette is provided to illustrate the approach. The intent is to provide undergraduate social work students and educators with grounding in a resiliency-oriented framework useful in assessment and practice with military service personnel to facilitate healthy coping and adaptation to civilian life.

This teaching note describes my experience discovering and addressing challenges to graduating baccalaureate social work students' self-efficacy, particularly on the use of a substance-use-oriented evidence-based practice (EBP) in fieldwork placements. This discovery led to the development of an exercise, presented here, to proactively identify and address such challenges. The exercise consists of a structured discussion that invokes theory and professional responsibility, followed by the instructor modeling role playing for the class. The exercise culminates in dyadic role playing between students with individualized feedback provided by the professor. In addition to promoting student self-efficacy, the exercise is designed to address practice competencies specified by the Council on Social Work Education's Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards and specifically to promote the use of EBP in the field.

Teaching a Strengths Perspective in Child Protection Work
Pub Date : 2016-05-24 DOI: 10.18084/1084-7219.21.1.13

This article describes a pedagogical strategy that provides an opportunity for BSW students to think critically about their interpretations of child protection clients and begin to engage with a strengths perspective. This teaching strategy uses reactance theory to introduce a nonpathologizing approach to client resistance. By reframing client resistance and reconsidering assumptions, this approach lays the groundwork for the use of a strengths perspective with involuntary clients and the development of collaborative relationships. Students' written feedback before and after the class (N=56) describes their experiences with this teaching strategy. The feedback suggests that while a deficits-based approach seems deeply rooted in some students' assumptions about clients, perhaps especially in child protection where the consequences of parental resistance are significant, many students found this teaching strategy facilitated their consideration of alternative explanations of the client's behavior and empath...

Service learning has long been used to foster students' personal and professional development and encourage civic engagement. This study explored how service learning affected the development of professional values in undergraduate social work students, with a focus on the core values of the profession outlined by the National Association of Social Workers. Thirty- six students enrolled in a service- learning course with 30 hours of required service in an agency completed a survey at the end of the semester. The majority of respondents reported observing a slight or significant increase for them personally in each of the core values as a result of the service-learning experience. The core values of service and competence increased the most. Working with agency clients and participating in class discussions were the most helpful in the development of all the core values.

Today's world faces unprecedented complexities. Governments, businesses, and nonprofits have far to go in solving these problems. The economic recession of 2007 exposed a significant decline in public and private support for social services (Pitt- Catsouphes & Berzin, 2015) and the need for social workers to facilitate new ways of addressing the complex, interwoven problems of poverty, racism, social inequity, and discrimination. Now more than ever, social workers need to understand how social services can utilize new strategies with new solutions to address these issues (Berzin, 2012). ). Shuman & Fuller (2005) coined the phrase “revolution will not be funded,” indicating that nonprofits all over the country must devise new incomegenerating strategies to empower disadvantaged groups.
