The intentional variability of Lapita pottery fabrics 拉皮塔陶器织物的有意变异性

Results from petrographic and chemical analysis of decorated Lapita pottery from Vao, Vanuatu show that the majority was manufactured locally but that several variations of local raw materials were used. This indicates that temper material was collected from a range of settings, most of them accessible locally on Malakula. Two samples have temper corresponding with raw materials expected from the island of Efate in central Vanuatu where other significant Lapita sites are located. This pattern of fabric variability parallels recurrent practices documented at other founder Lapita sites, including Teouma on Efate. We propose that mobility and experimentation are not the only explanations available to justify the greater initial variability in raw materials used for pottery manufacturing at founder Lapita settlements. We argue that the variability of raw material results from a purposeful strategy guided by cultural norms or rules similar to those directing other behaviors associated with decorated Lapita pots, such as decorative motifs, paint application, vessel forms, and deliberate burial.

New archaeological discoveries in north-central Timor-Leste indicate sociocultural adaptations to landscape change during the Holocene 在东帝汶中北部的新考古发现表明,在全新世期间,社会文化适应了景观变化

During the Holocene, Wallacea saw dramatic sociocultural changes during the Pre-ceramic, Neolithic, Metal-age, and Colonial periods, as well as climatic and associated environmental changes that affected the landscapes and ecologies of islands. These environmental and cultural processes appear to have influenced human socioeconomic adaptations throughout the archipelago. Here, we present new anthropological and archaeological data demonstrating the effects of these processes. Excavations at the cave site of Hatu Saur on the north coast of Timor-Leste have revealed a deep archaeological sequence that dates from ca. 10,500 years until the present. The site contains extensive assemblages of faunal remains, as well as stone artifacts, revealing settlement patterns that were influenced by sea level change and estuarine infilling after 7 ka. The sequence encompasses the beginning of the Neolithic in Timor-Leste, some 3500 years ago, and the period from ca. 700 years ago when outside influences, including Chinese and Makassar traders and Dutch and Portuguese colonization, greatly affected the indigenous culture and economy on the island of Timor, reflected in the material culture remains from Hatu Saur. The archaeological findings complement related anthropological research in the region that highlights unique local mythologies of settlement origins and their contested histories.

AbstractRecent studies have underlined the importance of shellfish in Ancestral Wabanaki diets. Green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) remains are a substantial component of shellfish assemblages from some Ancestral Wabanaki habitation sites and are present in smaller amounts in many other archaeological sites on the coastal Northeast. We summarize extant knowledge of archaeological sea urchin remains in the Quoddy Region of New Brunswick and Maine, part of the traditional homeland of the Peskotomuhkatiyik (the Passamaquoddy people). We position this information in regional historical, ecological, and archaeological contexts. Our results suggest that sea urchins were harvested at specific points in the annual tidal cycle. Green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) remains are a substantial component of shellfish assemblages from some Ancestral Wabanaki habitation sites and are present in smaller amounts in many other archaeological sites on the coastal Northeast. We summarize extant knowledge of archaeological sea urchin remains in the Quoddy Region of New Brunswick and Maine, part of the traditional homeland of the Peskotomuhkatiyik (the Passamaquoddy people). We position this information in regional historical, ecological, and archaeological contexts. Our results suggest that sea urchins were harvested at specific points in the annual tidal cycle.
