A technique of designing a slot antenna with multi-band operation is described in this paper first. The design is based on introducing a short circuit point on the slot antenna for each additional required frequency band of operation. This will create different effective electrical slot lengths from a single-feed resonant slot. Examples of dual-band and tri-band slot antennas are provided. A feature of the proposed approach is that similar broadside radiation patterns are produced for each frequency band. Additionally the ratios between the frequency bands are flexible and easily designed. Then, by making the short circuit points in open or short states with switches, the proposed slot antenna is able to change the frequency response from single-band to multi-band operation.

The boom of the wireless communications industry during the last 10 to 20 years created an increased need for developing particularly small-antenna measurement techniques. Since then, the research on small communications antenna measurements has followed the evolution of numerous new radio systems and the increase in the operating frequencies. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the most recent research on novel measurement methods for small antennas from the UHF band to the 60-GHz band. The subjects include multi-probe antenna measurement systems, spherical scanning techniques, probe correction techniques, probes, and 60-GHz on-wafer antenna measurements.

Characteristics of antennas and propagation channels in on-body communications have been ascertained. Earlier studies indicated that not only maximization of path loss between body-mounted devises by use of monopole-like antennas but also countermeasures against fading by use of multi polarization antennas may be an important issue. Multi polarization can be obtained by perturbing the patch antennas. That is well known as circularly polarized patch antennas. In this paper, a perturbed patch antenna on a small ground plane in vicinity of the human body is characterized for some purposes such as challenge for co-existence of antenna and the human body rather than shutting out the body effects. Specifically, variation of input impedance, axial ratio, radiation efficiency, and radiation pattern of the antenna are evaluated by use of numerical calculation.

In today's 60GHz radios large signal to noise ratios are needed due to the high atmospheric losses inherent to 60GHz communications. This paper tackles the isolation of leakage noise from the transmitter to the receiver by means of a reactive surface. We achieved the aforementioned by using a variation of the Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) on a one layer Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) substrate. It is proven that in order to achieve noise suppression the artificial material does not require a high-impedance surface.

Perhaps there is no single topic that has elicited more attention, and has created more excitement in the scientific community in recent years, as that of Metamaterials. In this talk we will begin by reviewing the fundamentals of Metamaterials by asking the question: “How do we categorize metamaterials and derive their effective medium properties?” We will then go on to address a related question that is very relevant from the point of view of a practicing engineer, namely: “How can they help us build better ‘widgets’, such as flat superlenses, highly-directive small antennas, miniaturized sensors, cloaks that make objects invisible [1] and devices that exhibit extraordinary transmission (EOT). (See Figs. 1 through 4)

A film-antenna capable of generating two wide resonant modes for covering the AMPS/GSM bands and the DCS/PCS/ UMTS bands for mobile phones is proposed. The antenna consists of two superimposed radiating arms which can support two resonant modes by themselves. The frequency range of a resonant mode generated by one of the arm is arranged to differ a little with the corresponding mode of the other, at the fundamental and higher-order modes. As a result, the bandwidths at both of the resonant modes are significantly enhanced. The antenna has a dimension of 5×15×40 mm3 and shows fairly good omni-directional radiation patterns at all the operating bands.

This paper discusses the details surrounding the measurement of electrically small antennas, common errors in measurements, and the implications of these errors on system performance. Issues of small ground planes, cable effects, and efficiency measurements are examined for their apparent and interrelated effects on input impedance, radiation patterns, and system performance.

The effective use of multiple antenna systems in compact terminal devices is plagued by the problems of mutual coupling and spatial correlation. Consequently, increasing the number of antennas per unit volume results in rapidly diminishing returns after an upper limit is reached. We review recent advances on this topic of closely coupled antennas, including several existing techniques that may be used to push the boundary further, such that closely spaced antennas can still give good performance. A new approach of decoupling closely spaced antennas is also introduced.

Although the recently presented Double Rhombus antenna is small in size, it is still large compared to the half wavelength at the higher operating frequencies. Therefore, we proposed a modified version of the antenna to decrease its size to be close to half wavelength at the highest usable frequency, to be used in phased array applications and other wireless communications where compact size and wide bandwidth are required. The new antenna is obtained by bending part of the long dipole. In addition, a compact microstrip 180o phase shifter is also designed to be used with the new antenna.

RFID usage is steadily increasing in the world, and its frequency bands are assigned in each country. RFID in UHF band is mainly used in 900MHz band. Allocated frequency bands of Europe, the USA and Japan are included from 860 to 960MHz. Broadbanding of the IC and antenna is needed to manage the worldwide RFID frequency band. This paper proposes broadband matching of a RFID antenna by using a T-type circuit. The antenna consists of a meander-line and a T-type circuit that realizes conjugate impedance matching to the IC impedance. Equivalent circuits of the antenna are shown and evaluated by parametric study. Prototype of the antenna is realized and its numerical analyses are examined.
