Short-run Johansen frontier-based industry models: methodological refinements and empirical illustration on fisheries 短期约翰森基于边界的产业模型:渔业的方法改进和实证说明

This contribution focuses on extending the current state of the art in a central resource allocation planning model known under the name of the short-run Johansen industry model in three ways. First, we correct a long-standing issue of the correct choice of weight variables on the capacity distribution by guaranteeing that these weights determine production combinations that belong to the production technology on which the plant capacity estimates are based in the first place. Second, we exploit the gap between average practice and best practice models by introducing an efficiency improvement imperative that allows for partial technical inefficiency when planning. Third, instead of only considering output-oriented plant capacity, we allow for alternative plant capacity concepts. In particular, we introduce an input-oriented plant capacity concept, and an alternative attainable output-oriented plant capacity concept that corrects a major empirical issue in the traditional output-oriented plant capacity notion. These methodological refinements are illustrated with a data set on U.S. fishing vessels by developing a planning model to curb overfishing.

A note on functional form specification in random coefficients stochastic frontier models 随机系数随机前沿模型的函数形式规范问题

Abstract This study presents a random coefficients stochastic frontier model that can accommodate the flexible translog functional form without being computationally demanding and thus time consuming to estimate. This is achieved by restricting the second-order frontier parameters to be common to all firms. For comparison, random coefficients stochastic frontier models with Cobb–Douglas, semi-translog and translog specifications with all parameters being firm-specific are estimated. The models are applied to an unbalanced panel of German dairy farms, and Bayesian techniques are used for the estimation. The results suggest that the time needed for the sampler to complete in the proposed model reduces dramatically as opposed to a translog model where all parameters are firm-specific. The elasticities exhibit some differences, depending on the choice of functional form, whilst the efficiency scores are less affected. Bayes factors suggest that the proposed model fits the data best.

Abstract In this paper we extend the denominator rule for ratios given in different units of measurement and we explain how to derive the relevant aggregation shares, which are given in terms of the denominator variable and the constants converting the relevant variables into the same unit of measurement.

Abstract Definitions of output and input are key to studies of productivity analysis, as they are to the national accounts of countries. This paper systematically reviews alternative definitions at production unit and aggregate levels, illustrating the different perspectives that they provide on production and income, and making the case for their use in understanding different aspects of firm and country economic performance.
