This chapter focuses on the nature and consequences of a passion for leadership. The construct of passion for leadership is presented, as is a model of its potential behavioral and psychological consequences. More specifically, drawing from the dualistic model of passion, the chapter explains how harmonious and obsessive passion for leadership may affect high-quality and poor-quality leadership behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, the chapter examines how the two types of passion may influence leaders’ well-being differently. To advance the conceptualization of a passion for leadership, an agenda for future research is provided and the applicability of this new construct for practitioners in the field is explained.

This chapter presents an extensive review of the research conducted to date on passion and conflict between an array of passionate activities and other domains, with a special focus on available results regarding passion for work. The behavioral and psychological mechanisms underlying the relationship between passion and conflict, and especially the case of work–family conflict, are identified. Various forms of work-life conflict are delineated according to their core process (time-, strain- or behavior-based) and direction (work-family versus family-work conflict). The chapter more particularly focuses on the potential mediator role of several variables (including work time, work and family-specific behaviors, cognitions such as rumination, affects such as role tension) and the possible moderating role of other variables (sociodemographic variables, work and family characteristics). Theoretical and practical implications are offered, as well as suggestions for future research.

This chapter delves into the identity–passion interface and examines how nuances in this relationship manifest in different outcomes. The construct of identity and how it relates to an individual’s self-concept is discussed to more fully understand how identity plays a central role in passion. We argue that identities serve as a foundation of an individual’s passion, and that as such, the relative space that certain identities occupy within one’s self-concept has implications for how different types of passion manifest. The chapter reviews the primary theories of passion developed by scholars, and examines the research that has investigated the relationship between identities and passion. This chapter also offers a summary of the progress made in this area and the work that remains to be done.

This chapter focuses on how passion for work influences the interpersonal relationships the employee forms both at work and outside work. It reviews the research and theoretical underpinnings for why passion for work matters for interpersonal relationships. This part particularly describes research on overall relationships, citizenship behaviors, as well as counterproductive work behaviors. It also separates between cognitive, affective, and behavioral manifestations of passion for work. Furthermore, this chapter considers how passion can spill into the relationships employees form outside of work, particularly the romantic relationships. Finally, the status of the research on passion for work and interpersonal relationships is discussed along with some suggestions for future research avenues and practical implications.

This chapter reviews and integrates published articles that examine passion for one’s work as a direct or indirect predictor of work-related performance (task performance, business performance, and job creativity) and work attitudes (job satisfaction and organizational commitment). A review of the studied underlying mechanisms at play in these relationships is also provided. A summary of what we know and what we do not yet know about the relationship between passion and work attitudes and performance is offered, followed by recommendations for managers who wish to harness performance and attitudinal benefits stemming from work passion.

This chapter discusses the role of passion in entrepreneurship. The nature of emotions, and how they relate to passion, is explained with research in support. By focusing on new venture creation and growth, this chapter presents a short review of how entrepreneurship has been defined in the literature, as well as its value and challenges. Studies examining the relationships between passion and entrepreneurial success and performance are reviewed, and a discussion on the various scales to measure passion is provided.

This chapter focuses on the crucial role that autonomy-supportive social environments play in the development of passion toward work. It provides an overview of self-determination theory and how basic psychological needs can be fulfilled or thwarted by one’s working environment. The importance of autonomy-supportive environments, and what they entail, in the initial and ongoing development of passion are highlighted, with research, both in the work and nonwork domains, in support. Finally, practical applications of this relationship between autonomy-supportive work environments and the development of a more intense and healthier form of passion toward work are also discussed, mainly in terms of leaders’ training.

This chapter reviews theories and perspectives, such as role theory, the life course perspective, and the resource perspective, pertaining to retirement and how passion for work relates to the main theoretical background used to study retirement. An extensive review of the research that has examined the role of passion for work in retirees’ psychological adjustment is presented. Results show that harmonious passion for work is positively associated with retirees’ psychological adjustment, whereas the opposite if found for obsessive passion. The chapter concludes with suggestions for future research in this important area as well as with practical implications aimed at organizations, workers and retirees to facilitate a smoother life transition and to experience a more fulfilling retirement.

The present chapter provides an integrative review of the work stress literature while referring to the empirical evidence on passion for work in relation to psychological health, that is, well- and ill-being manifestations. Drawing on recent scientific literature, the chapter presents an extended dualist model of passion in adaptation to the work environment, which aims to identify work environment factors that are associated with well- and ill-being, and to examine the moderating role of passion for work in the psychological processes associated with psychological health. Results confirming the proposed model are presented, as well as future research directions.

There are four primary purposes of this chapter. First, the chapter presents a social cognitive model for the formulation of work passion, an operational definition, and its key components. Second, the chapter places the employee work passion appraisal (EWPA) model into perspective using the literature on work passion. Third, the chapter reviews the empirical research studies completed on the EWPA model since its inception. Fourth, the chapter suggests future directions for the research and application of the model. Using social cognitive appraisal theory as its origins, the EWPA model, composed of the components of cognition, affect, a sense of job well-being, and work intentions, will be defined and explored.
