Input Modality and its Effect on Memory Recall 输入方式及其对记忆回忆的影响

One’s learning performance may be influenced by many internal and external factors. In addition to one’s cognitive ability, matters related to the academic context such as learning materials, contents and instruction can regulate and influence learning performance. The study aimed to examine the effects of different input modalities on learning performance by measuring memory recall success. A total of 96 participants took part in an experimental study employing a between-subject design. They were randomly assigned to one of the three groups that were presented with either visual or auditory or a combination of visual-auditory inputs. In the study phase, the visual input group was asked to read the inputs which were visually presented to them. As for the auditory group, the participants were required to listen to the inputs presented auditorily to them. The visual-auditory group did both simultaneously (seeing and listening to the inputs) as the inputs combined both visual and auditory presentation. In the test phase, they were required to recall words that they could best recall from the study phase. Analysis of ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference between the different input modalities on the participant’s ability to recall words. It signifies that learning materials that are presented both in audio and visual are better recalled compared to materials learned in a single modality (either visual or audio alone). The modality effect uncovered in the present study has important instructional implications related to the presentation of learning materials to optimise learners’ ability to learn.

Music-based Language Programme for Preschool Teachers' Training and Lesson delivery: A Pilot Trial 以音乐为基础的学前教师培训和教学语言课程:试点试验

Language delay in preschoolers is linked to learning difficulties and persistent communication issues. Studies show that early music-making positively impacts young children's language development. Music-based Language Programme aims to enhance preschoolers’ language skills by training preschool teachers to deliver quality music lessons with language-focused objectives. This pilot trial aimed to determine the feasibility of teacher training for the programme's delivery. Furthermore, the secondary aim was to evaluate the acceptability of the programme's implementation by stakeholders. Methods: The 6-week one-arm pilot trial took place in Sarawak, Malaysia (October to November 2021). It included preschool visits, parent briefings, teacher training, and music lesson delivery. The participants included teachers (n = 4), preschoolers (n = 11), parents (n = 11), and the principal (n = 1) in a preschool that practiced inclusion. A non-probability-purposive sampling recruitment strategy was employed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used a case study mixed methods approach to collect data through reports, observations, group discussions, feedback, questionnaires, and documentation. Results: There was a high rate of participant retention (100%) and completion of data collection tasks (91–100%). Additionally, there was a favourable shift (7–27%) in three teachers' self-efficacy ratings before and after the teacher training and a reasonably high implementation fidelity (87%). There were no adverse events related to the study participants. Conclusion: The study demonstrated promising results across multiple participant levels, as it was perceived to be feasible, acceptable, and appropriate by teachers, preschoolers, the principal, and parents. The findings provided direct implications for the progression of the pilot trial to the full-scale main study.

Gamification in Improving Reading Skills of Preschool Children: Blending Through Puzzle Game 游戏化在提高学龄前儿童阅读能力中的作用:通过益智游戏进行融合

This study explores the effectiveness of puzzle games in improving the learning of Malay Language reading skills among preschool children. The study focuses on inculcating blending skills through puzzle games since one of the most critical elements in learning reading is phonics which involves the skills of letter recognition and phonemic segmentation. Two teachers and twenty-eight preschool children were involved in this study, consisting of 17 preschool children from one of the primary schools in Serian and 11 preschool children from one of the schools in Padawan. These preschool children between the age of five and six were divided into two teams of red and blue. Their preschool teacher monitored them during playday. Two methods were involved in collecting the data: interview and observation. Teachers' opinions on the interventions were acquired in semi-structured interviews, and preschool children were observed. These two preschools' findings show that blending through puzzle games in improving reading skills displays more significant learning benefits and is effective in collaboration, readiness, understanding, and shared mental models. Preschool children show more interest in participating in puzzle games' learning process. The game could be used for English classes and played in a larger space, such as a hall, to make it easier for preschool children to move. Future enhancements could focus on digitalised gamification that can provide more exciting and interactive gameplay.

The Mediating Role of Chinese Values in the Satisfaction of Work-Life Balance among Chinese Bank Employees: A Case Study 中国价值观对中国银行员工工作生活平衡满意度的中介作用:个案研究

The topic of Work-Life Balance has become a widely discussed issue in Western contexts due to the rising stress levels in both work and personal life. Only recently has the topic become popular in Asian countries, including Malaysia. While studies have explored the Work-Life Balance in the banking sector, there remains a scarcity of research examining the cultural aspect of the Work-Life Balance of Chinese ethnicity outside Mainland China. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the mediating role of Chinese Values on the relationship between antecedents of Work-Life Balance (including work involvement, work overload, work support, family involvement, family overload, and family support) and Work-Life Balance satisfaction among Chinese bank employees in Sarawak, Malaysia. A quantitative method was employed to gather data from 52 Chinese bank employees, which was then analysed using IBM SPSS version 25.0, Pearson Correlation Analysis, and the PROCESS for mediation. The results of this study demonstrate that Chinese Values play a significant mediating role in the relationship between some of the antecedents of Work-Life Balance (work involvement, work overload, work support and family support) and satisfaction with Work-Life Balance. Based on these findings, it is recommended that some cultural aspects of Chinese values, which are usually accepted by other ethnicities, be considered when developing and implementing Work-Life Balance programs in the banking sector. The study highlights the importance of considering cultural differences in the design of workplace programs to improve Work-Life Balance satisfaction among employees.

Interventions for Enhancing Indigenous Undergraduates' Programming Learning: A Systematic Review 促进原住民大学生程式设计学习之干预措施:系统回顾

This study reviews the challenges faced by indigenous undergraduates in learning programming and identifies interventions to address them. A systematic review of 37 studies published between 2000 and 2022 found that Indigenous undergraduates face barriers to learning programming related to their indigeneity, motivation, mathematics anxiety, cognitive load, pedagogy, prior knowledge, critical thinking, and programming language anxiety. Interventions such as ethnoprogramming, culturally responsive pedagogy, ethnomathematics, and gamification have been proposed to overcome these challenges. Our review and analysis suggest that culturally responsive pedagogy and gamification show promise in improving indigenous undergraduates' programming learning outcomes. This study highlights the importance of designing effective interventions to support Indigenous undergraduates' learning and career opportunities in the global programming market. Future research could explore specialised interventions tailored to indigenous learners' unique needs and perspectives.

Gamified Learning Intervention to Promote Music Literacy and Creativity in Elementary Music Education 游戏化学习干预在小学音乐教育中促进音乐素养与创造力

Music education often emphasises the acquisition of practical components, with students assessed on their ability to handle and operate musical instruments. The theoretical aspects of music education, particularly music theory, have been relegated to a secondary role. However, recent research has shown that music creativity, including composition, improvisation, performance of composed music, and ideation, is a core element in music studies. Teaching music theory is becoming less popular among music teachers, and consequently, the stigma associated with learning music theory limits students' ability to explore music independently. This study proposes a gamified learning intervention through Music Rhythm Tour Board Game to promote music literacy and creativity in elementary music education. Observations on players’ behaviour were conducted to test the efficacy of the board game in promoting music composition. The gameplay analysis showed how the intervention successfully reduced the stigma associated with constructing rhythmic phrases, facilitating a smoother transition to music composition and rhythmic sight reading (kinetic responses of players). Circuit Smart: Understanding Electricity through Collaborative Learning and Gamification 电路智能:通过协作学习和游戏化理解电

This paper explores the use of gamification in providing solutions to overcome learning problems related to electricity on series and parallel circuits in Science for Primary Year 5. The two primary schools involved were located in the rural districts of Betong and Lubok Antu in Sarawak. The use of game design thinking as a learning approach was utilised to facilitate the creation of educational games. The games produced were inspired by modern and traditional games. Several modifications were re-designed for the game elements to appropriately suit the learning context and logistics involved. The games consisted of both online and physical means of conduct where participants were able to collaborate between two schools as well as among themselves as a group. The findings obtained by the participants as the players of the games revealed the effectiveness of the games with the combination of computer-supported and collaborative learning in helping them understand the Science topic through play. Additionally, the implementation of online communication, collaborative activities, and sharing of knowledge was accomplished between the two schools via the Internet.

Challenges and Strategies of Mental Health Professionals Working with the Elderly in Malaysia 马来西亚与老年人一起工作的心理健康专业人员的挑战和策略

Malaysia is expected to be an ageing nation by 2030, in which the elderly will make up at least 15% of the total population. As a result, there is a growing demand for well-trained mental health professionals (MHPs) to address the psychosocial and mental health issues faced by the elderly. To provide quality mental health care for the elderly, it is crucial for MHPs to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to understand their unique needs and challenges. The aim of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the challenges and coping strategies of MHPs working with the elderly. Through in-depth interviews with five MHPs, the study identified several challenges, including stereotypes held by the elderly towards mental health services, communication barriers, and the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of the elderly. The MHPs addressed these challenges using coping strategies such as increasing mental health awareness and support for the elderly, using appropriate communication methods, and facilitating access to mental health care. Future studies with a more significant number of MHPs from diverse demographic backgrounds and varying levels of working experience are recommended to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges involved in psychotherapy with the ageing population and identify optimal ways to overcome them.

Love Relationship Satisfaction, Love Styles and Suicidal Ideation Among University Students 大学生恋爱关系满意度、恋爱方式与自杀意念

The suicide rate is increasing at an alarming pace, even among university students. Thus, this study attempted to identify suicidal ideation among university students through the perspective of love relationships (love satisfaction, love styles) and gender differences. A random sampling method has been carried out to collect the data. Analysis of the responses demonstrated that love relationship satisfaction was not associated with suicidal ideation among university students. On the other hand, there is a positive relationship between love styles and suicidal ideation among university students. Furthermore, love styles have a positive association with love relationship satisfaction. In addition, there is a significant difference between genders in suicidal ideation among university students, with females having higher suicidal ideation than males.

Enhancing Service Quality through Employee Knowledge in the Tourism Industry 利用员工知识提升旅游业的服务质素

The tourism industry plays a crucial role in Malaysia's economy, driving long-term growth and development. To deliver high-quality customer experiences, the industry must consider numerous factors, including the level of knowledge of its employees. This study explores the relationship between knowledge and service quality in the context of tourist guides working in the Southwest Sarawak (Kuching), Central Sarawak (Sibu) and Northeast Sarawak (Miri) regions. The study was conducted using a stratified random sampling method, and data was collected through a survey questionnaire. The data was analysed using Structural Equation Modeling techniques, and the findings indicated a significant relationship between knowledge and various service quality dimensions, including reliability, assurance, tangibles, empathy, and responsiveness. The study aims to inform the development of effective policies and programmes by the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies and to provide a foundation for future research on the Malaysian tourism industry.
