Visualization of Flake Knapping Sequence with Analyzing Assembled Chipped Stone Tools 用分析组装的石制工具的碎片敲击序列的可视化

For studying stone tools, repeating assembly and separation of stone tools is an inevitable process. The instructions of this process, however, are ambiguous when traditional 2D illustrations are used. The 3D exploded view is an effective way for instructing the assembly, and it has been widely used in many (cid:12)elds, while it has seldom been used in archaeology. We apply this powerful presentation technique to stone tool models, and study methods of generating exploded graphs and assembly sequences with point clouds of stone tools by computer graphics algorithms. Moreover, lithic knapping methods and relic excavation reports are analyzed to evaluate the difference of (cid:13)ake knapping sequences between the contents of report and automatic generation by using an algorithm. In addition to presentation of principles for restoring stone tools, we design the functions and algorithms of our system based on archaeological rules. The experiment results of stone tool assembly show effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method. The user evaluation indicates that 3D visualization technology can assist in efficient research of (cid:13)ake knapping sequence instruction for chipped stone tools.

A Segmentation Algorithm for Reconstruction of Decorations on Arm Part of Mongolian Buddha Statue Based on Medial Axis 基于内轴线的蒙古佛像臂部装饰重建分割算法

Extracting the reconstructed decoration parts of a Buddha statue contributes to the analysis in archaeology and culture. A segmented decoration part with good precision is required for reconstructing the solid model of a decoration. This paper presents a novel segmentation algorithm of a point cloud for decoration points with a simple calculation based on divided rectangular surfaces. In our method, the decoration feature of the standard form according to a template is used to detect an exact decoration region. A differentiation graph indicating a variation of tangent vectors is introduced to extract the feature of a decoration region in a two-dimensional domain. A decoration region is detected according to higher correlation values with the decoration feature of the standard form. The proposed method is tested on the arm parts of a Mongolian Buddha statue and the effectiveness of our algorithm is confirmed and evaluated. The decoration points are segmented precisely, and the decoration and background parts are separated. Moreover, holes in the separated background are filled using a B-spline surface fitting technique for generating a complete surface model of the decoration parts and background.
