Gender preferences for providers of health and counseling services. 保健和咨询服务提供者的性别偏好。

Abstract A study of gender preferences for providers of health, counseling, and academic services examined the relationship of gender preference to the gender of client or potential client and the nature of the service sought. Participants in the study represented 64% of a randomly selected sample of undergraduates at a private coeducational university. These participants, totaling 1,095, included 545 women and 550 men. Results of the study suggest that gender preferences do exist among women and men for providers of some health and counseling services. Preferences are typically for same-gender individuals. Women more often than men think it important to have a choice of a male or female provider and women more frequently than men tend to prefer a same-gender provider for a given service and for more of the services considered. The study suggests that gender preference is related to the nature of the service. Preference for a same-gender provider is stronger for all respondents in those services that seem...

The role of the pharmacist in the delivery of family planning services to college students. 药师在大学生计划生育服务中的作用。
Pub Date : 1981-06-01 DOI: 10.1080/01644300.1981.10393035
M C Smith, H Wetherbee
Abstract A survey was conducted among college students to determine their assessment of the potential of the pharmacist as a family planning counselor. Pharmacists were seen as an appropriate source of contraceptive information for many contraceptive methods, but few respondents had actually consulted a pharmacist. Pharmacists were viewed as competent to provide contraceptive information by a slight majority of the respondents, but only half indicated they would use the pharmacist as a source of this kind of information.

Positive pregnancy tests at Stanford: a follow up study, 1978-1980. 斯坦福大学怀孕测试呈阳性:1978-1980年的后续研究。
Pub Date : 1981-06-01 DOI: 10.1080/01644300.1981.10393033
J M Dorman
This follow-up study compares a 1978-80 survey of 195 patients with positive pregnancy tests to a previous study of a survey in 1973-75 in order to analyze the association of unplanned pregnancies and contraceptive practices among Stanford University students. Of the 195 patients, 105 (54%) filled out questionnaires and more information was retrieved from medical records of 69 other students. Comparison was made to a control population consisting of 100 sexually active women out of a total of 132 who were given the questionnaire. 55 (28.4%) of the pregnancies out of the total of 174 were planned while 119 were unplanned. This compares with 177 (40 planned (22.6%), 130 unplanned, 7 unknown) from 1978 and 95 (17 planned (17.8%), 63 unplanned, 15 unknown) from 1975. Those with planned pregnancies were generally married graduate students or student wives. Of the unplanned group, 24.4% were married and continued the pregnancy (7.6%), whereas the 90 single pregnant women elected to terminate (59.7%). The contraceptive methods that were used unsuccessfully to prevent pregnancy were "coitus dependent" methods such as the diaphragm (41.2%) and unreliable methods such as rhythm (16.8%). In the previous study, the diaphragm was only 15% relied upon. In the control populations, diaphragm use rose from 20% to 41% in 1979. These results confirm those of the earlier study in terms of the increased use of mechanical methods, e.g. the diaphragm, and an increasing number of unplanned pregnancies. This correlation prompts the need for student health services to develop ways to inform students better and for new approaches to be developed to combat the ultimate reliance upon abortion as a birth control method.

Abstract The field of administration and management has undergone a steady evolution since its origin at the turn of the century. A perspective regarding that development is useful to the health service administrator. This paper examines and interprets selected writings in administration and management. The appropriateness of this open-communication model to medical settings is demonstrated and the application of this model to a specific student health service is described and discussed.

Abstract The goal of the five year University of Massachusetts (UMass) Demonstration Alcohol Education Project has been to promote responsible decision making about alcohol use. The UMass/Amherst campus has 25,000 students, of which there is an approximate one third turnover every academic year. Educational methods used to achieve the goal have included community development, mass media, and such intensive approaches as workshops, courses, and guest lectures. Mass media reaches up to 70% of the student body, while intensive interventions reach about 5%. Data has been gathered from a large number of sources in order to evaluate the following objectives: 1) University students will demonstrate decreased inappropriate alcohol consumption patterns. 2) University students will demonstrate an increased level of planning, conducting, and participation in responsible social activities. 3) University students will demonstrate an increased number of interventions with peers around alcohol issues. 4) University stud...

Campus health education: the plan, the program and the paradigm. 校园健康教育:计划、方案与范式。

Abstract This paper describes the planning process, the program implementation, and an innovative evaluation paradigm for a campus-wide health education program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The slow, frustrating planning process which eventually culminated in a feasible program followed a needs assessment of resident freshman. Focusing on the topics of mental health, sexuality, contraceptives, and drug abuse, a series of miniteachings provided an opportunity for volunteer graduate and undergraduate health majors to gain experience and practice their professional skills. Aided by a small grant, the staff of Student Health Services, and some of the health education faculty, health students presented evening programs for the campus dormitories. An evaluation strategy, based on qualitative, causal, and explanatory data, also supplemented by quantitative data, included: a seven-year needs assessment survey, utilization rates of health services, instructors observation checklist forms, non...

Natural family planning: women deserve the truth. 自然计划生育:女人应该知道真相。

The most recent data on natural methods of family planning, notably on the Billings, or ovulation, method, show statistically significant data on their effectiveness. A study conducted on 1139 couples followed for 2 years has yielded a failure rate of only 1.14%. Another study conducted in 1980 on 55 couples followed for a 2 year period has yielded a similar failure rate. Many experts sustain that NFP methods are not only completely risk-free, but are a creative contribution to a couple's human experience. The 3 NFP methods are the thermal, the sympto-thermal, and the ovulation method. NFP methods are not as well known as they deserve to be; women have a right to know all that is available to them in the field of contraception.
