Abstract College faculty and student relationships often suffer due to an absence of explicit, written policy regarding authorship of collaborative research findings and advisor responsibilities. This article suggests that each department develop and disseminate such policy to provide guidance for both faculty and students. Students will not feel used and faculty will not feel confused when a clear statement of the ethics of their relationship is available. Lastly, this article presents one university's policy that is now operative and effective.

A perilous paradox: the contraceptive behavior of college students. 一个危险的悖论:大学生的避孕行为。
Pub Date : 1981-12-01 DOI: 10.1080/01644300.1981.10393051
K D Rindskopf
Abstract Currently, college students live in a social environment where contraceptive technology is highly effective, contraceptive information and methods are widely available, and premarital sexual activity is generally condoned. Paradoxically, data indicate that these students are poor contraceptive users, and that pregnancy and abortion rates among college students are surprisingly high. Since these social conditions should result in adequate contraceptive usage, other less obvious and overtly less rational factors must be influencing the behavior of this population. The objectives of this article are to a) describe more fully the paradoxical nature of the problem of contraceptive use among college students, in part by a review of the research on collegiate contraceptive and sexual behavior; b) examine theories which have been offered to explain contraceptive behavior in college populations; and c) discuss implications of existing data and theories for the contraceptive education of young adults. This...

Model of effective contraceptive counseling on campus. 校园有效避孕咨询模式。

G A Bachmann
Abstract Why does contraception fail? In 1978, 55% of all pregnancies in the United States were unintended! This overwhelming problem of birth control failure has also affected the college coed. In addition to information on available contraceptive methods, what should effective counseling by the college health care provider consist of to alleviate this problem? Just as there are guidelines on the use of each contraceptive method, there must also be guidelines on how to effectively counsel a student about the methods available. Effective vs. noneffective contraceptive use was studied at Rutgers University by comparing women who experienced birth control failure to those who did not, while using the same method. It was found that for a woman to be motivated to effectively and efficiently use her contraceptive method, she must be satisfied with its esthetic properties, trust its effectiveness, and be comfortable with its safety. Counseling that instills fear into women that their method will cause bodily ha...

The evolution of an eye care program at a university health service. 一所大学健康服务中心眼科护理项目的发展。
Pub Date : 1981-10-01 DOI: 10.1080/07448481.1981.9938880
F H Bloom, B W Averill, T C McBride
Abstract Traditionally, eye care services have not always been included in college health services. The awareness of eye care as an integral part of primary health care and the efficaciousness of these services in prepaid group practices is changing this. The purpose of this paper is to share a five year experience in developing a comprehensive eye care program for the university community at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. Attention is given to the scope of services, mode of practice, staffing and staff responsibilities, utilization of services, quality assessment, consumer surveys, and implication for plan members and other health care providers in the plan. It is hoped that this information will be helpful to those planning health care programs.

Modularized stress management for reduction of predicted illness. 模块化压力管理,减少预期的疾病。
Pub Date : 1981-10-01 DOI: 10.1080/07448481.1981.9938881

Abstract The purpose of this study was to develop a cost-effective modularized and self-paced learning method for reducing stress for beginning college students. Stress associated with entering collegiate programs significantly affects student adjustment and achievement. Many researchers report significant correlations between stress and serious physical and emotional illness. Two hundred ninty-nine students were randomly divided into control and experimental groups. All students completed a Stress Assessment Questionnaire at the beginning of the program and then at four weeks, fifteen weeks, and twelve months. This tool measured student self-reported physical, social, and emotional life changes during the previous year. During the first three weeks of the program, the experimental group received the modularized stress reduction packet aimed at helping students to assess their life stresses, understand the impact that stress has on their health, and develop individualized stress management skills. The con...
