In this paper we discuss the advantages (and disadvantages) of commercial sector gigabit fiber optic transceiver circuit evolution for avionics applications. We provide insight into some of the shortfalls that still exist with respect to avionics industry needs concerning fiber optic link health diagnostics, fault detection, and fault isolation. We close this paper with a first glance at the demonstration of a gigabit transceiver with in service OTDR capability for isolating faults in avionics fiber optic network cable plants

In this paper, we describe multiple input/output, multiple-service operation in a fully functional switch. Here, a 3times3 crosspoint RoF switch architecture is constructed and characterized. Time-domain switching effects on the distortion of RF signals and the linearity of the switch are measured and analyzed. The advantages of using single-mode fiber optic networks for communications on military avionics platforms are well recognized. For practical implementations, network components, which are small, light, robust and highly functional are required. Currently, these requirements are not met with COTS solutions and there is a need for new devices in which the integration of optical elements are the key. The manufacturability of such components and their suitability for reuse in different architectures are also of high relevance

It is only in the last year that deployment to the US military has occurred of a large scale production, airborne platform extensively utilizing optical fiber for data networking. This will launch the military into still broader application of optical communications to meet its ever increasing bandwidth needs. For over twenty years, the copper wiring experts have been meeting as a Wiring Action Group to identify reliability, maintainability, and availability issues. For the last five years, a sister group, the Fiber Optics Working Group, has been meeting to address similar issues, but focused on optical communications. This paper provides background on the JFOWG and clarifies the benefits that it brings to the US Navy

In WDM avionic LANs, the severity of performance degradation due to multipath interference (MPI) is dependent on the type of transmitter and the signal spectrum, and it is difficult to generalize about its effects without detailed knowledge of the system (Darcie, et. al., 1991). However, the use of low-return loss angle-polished connectors coupled with stringent connector cleaning procedures is expected to reduce MPI to a tolerable level. Therefore, the remainder of this paper will discuss the second linear effect that must be considered in the design of avionic LANs, namely component crosstalk
