This paper reviews advances in the development of WDM LAN standards. Focusing on standards for aerospace applications, it provides a synopsis of the scope, charter and recent activities of the WDM LAN working group of the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE), in the SAE's Fiber Optics and Applied Photonics committee. In addition, the paper describes key liaisons with complementary optical networking standards working groups within and outside the SAE and highlights associated WDM technology and standardization challenges

A concept demonstration of a code-correlation OTDR reflectometer is performed with improved sensitivity and < 1 cm resolution. It is shown that this approach can exceed conventional OTDR techniques in performance and eliminate dead-zones in the measurement, while being based upon commercially available optical component technology

We have described cases where the penalties incurred in IMDD links by utilizing EDFAs can be quite small or negligible. These conclusions are particularly important for short-length high-optical-power links, such as can be used in an avionic platform. These results relax the output-power requirements on low-noise lasers. In addition, this work demonstrates the significance of a new class of EDFAs, namely, EDFAs in compact flight-qualified packages having low noise figure in deep saturation

We have shown a method of locating faults in fiber using a new Sidelighter module that easily connects to popular microwave analyzers. The Sidelighter can be used in the field as it is compact and battery operated. Using the Sidelighter allow users to test RF and optical cables in one system. We have achieved 10 cm measurement resolution and can located failures in fibers at distances of up to 1 Km

Routing in an Optical Local Area Network using Wavelength Conversion 使用波长转换的光局域网路由

This project investigates the use of all-optical wavelength conversion to perform routing in a fiber optic local area network (LAN). In particular, the goal is to implement a scalable LAN that demonstrates reconfigurability and transparency, with minimal loss and bounded latency, enabling real time performance in the harsh conditions of the avionics environment. In these experiments, latency was reduced by over 55% when compared to an optical-electrical-optical (O-E-O) conversion technique, with the possibility for 75% reduction by using integrated optics (Jessop and Clifford, 2006)

OTDR can enable fault prediction (and circumvention with a certain level of redundancy) and it is possible to enter a new era of fiber optic maintenance concepts. Through fault prediction, is possible to replace or inspect suspect components before catastrophic failures occur. Redundant hardware permits completion of a mission segment with failed components and can lead to just-in-time provisioning of spares at scheduled maintenance periods. Topological loss maps with 10 cm resolution of the entire cable plant can be stored within each transceiver's memory and used as a reference for routine inspections

Pulse position modulation (PPM) in lasercom systems is known to provide potential advantages over other modulation schemes. In PPM, a periodic time frame is established and data is transmitted by placing a pulse in any one of several subintervals (or "slots") within each frame. In PPM/O-CDMA all users use the same frame structure and each transmits its unique address code in place of the PPM pulse. The advantage of PPM as a pulsed signal format is that 1) a single pulse can transmit multiple bits during each frame; 2) decoding (determining which subinterval contains the pulse) is by comparison rather than threshold tests (as in on-off-keying); 3) each user transmits in only a small fraction of the frame, hence the multi-access interference (MAI) of any user statistically spreads over the entire frame time, reducing the chance of overlap with any other user; and 4) under an average power constraint, increasing frame time increases the peak pulse power (i.e., PPM trades average power for peak power)

In this paper, we report our recent progress in the development of all-fiber tunable filters and their applications to a reconfigurable WDM add/drop module and tunable receiver. The major advances on tunable filters include (1) developing a precise-four layer model that provides a very useful guide for the filter design and fabrication, (2) designing and synthesizing nanocomposite electro-optic polymers so that one can not only tune the refractive index of the polymer via electro-optic polymer but can also adjust the biasing point of the refractive index via controlling the concentrations of nanoparticles
