This report describes the damage caused by gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar) and stick bugs (Ramulus mikado) to forests and host plants in 2020. Severe tree-crown defoliation was found in central parts of Korea, especially Gangwon (1,638 ha), Gyeonggi (1,134 ha), Chungbuk (726 ha) and Seoul (476 ha). Stick bug outbreaks occurred in hilly areas, such as Mt. Bongsan, located between Seoul and Goyang.

Disruption of Chemical Communication of Synanthedon tenuis (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) by Sex Pheromone Dispensers in Sweet Persimmon Orchards 性信息素对甜柿园小合甲化学通讯的干扰

Pheromone-based techniques are becoming a viable strategy of insect pest management as facilitated by the exponential increase in numbers of pheromone identifications from many insect pests. This is the report on the efficacy of pheromone-mediated chemical communication disruption (PCD) technique against the Korean population of smaller clearwing moths, Synanthedon tenuis (Butler) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) using its female sex pheromone component, (Z, Z )-3, 13-octadecadien-1-ol. The PCD trials were carried out four times during 2016 and 2017 in persimmon orchards located at Suncheon and Jinju Cities in Korea, and the PCD efficacy was expressed as the mean differences in the seasonal catches of S. tenuis males in the PCD and control plots. The seasonal male moth catches in monitoring traps installed in the PCD plots were significantly lower as compared with those installed in the control plots. Consequently, the PCD efficacy in the experimental orchards ranged from 95.2-100% with an average efficacy of 98.8 ± 1.2%, revealing a future possibility of pheromone-based management of S. tenuis.

Morphometric Characterization of Honey Bee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus, Inbred Lines in Korea 韩国蜜蜂近交系的形态计量学特征

The A, C, F colonies of Apis mellifera ligustica Spin. and D, V colony of Apis mellifera caucasia Gorb. bees were collected from 2005-2007. Consequently, inbred lines were derived from the bees of original colonies by matting in the isolated island with due regard for pure breeding. This project helps in the selection of colonies with higher production capacity, aiming to improve honey and royal jelly production and breeding programs. Twenty-three standard morphological traits of honeybee were evaluated, and samples were compared with the data of the two original subspecies. The result suggested that 8 traits partly preserved in bees of inbred lines, and the bees from A. m. ligustica preserved more traits than bees from A. m. caucasia. Among the studied inbred lines, the F line is distinguished by an increase in leg parameters, considered as a favorable phenotypic trait of inbred lines. Importantly, bred of beelines in the same area can be classified as remote and isolated areas. Therefore, we observed differences of inbred lines with the origin subspecies in description acquired with morphometric characteristics as a result of adaptation, breeding, purebred individual lines used as an important resource for breeding novel cross-breeding colonies.

On the Scientific Name of the Invaded Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Ricaniidae) in Korea 论韩国入侵飞虱的学名(半翅目:飞虱总科:飞虱科)

Brown ricaniid planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea) is one of the invaded pests in Korea. However, this species has been misidentified or not identified yet, caused confusions in taxonomy or agroecosystem. In the present study, we collected the specimens occurring in Korea nationwide and taxonomically reviewed. Consequently, we confirmed its scientific name as Ricania sublimata. Herein, a key to the Korean Ricania is provided.
