T'he change from the cadm-ium electrodes to the metaihydride-electrodes improv-es the energy density considerably. and allows a longer operation time by using a battery with the same dimensions. However the energ'y demand of a laptop computer nowadays in use can neither be covered with a standard Ni/Cd nor a Ni/MR-battery pack. The target is here defined as 8 h operation time for a laptop computer.

This paper presents the results of a prototype charger development, coupling a dual-level constant potential charger with a microprocessor controller. The controller implements a charging algorithm which exploits the inherent Ampere-Hour Rule of lead-acid batteries to prevent overcharge while guaranteeing rapid recharge, independent of the battery technology, battery age, battery capacity, discharge characteristics, battery history, or environmental conditions. A review of existing charging approaches, analysis of the new approach, and prototype results will be provided.

A high-perfomance ZVS-PWM three phase AC/DC active power converter using a newly proposed transformer-assisted Quasi-Resonant DC Link (TQRDCL) is described in this paper. The operating principle of this TQRDCL which has such excellent features as minimum dc bus voltage stress and no comlexity in predictive initializing resonant inductor current control under load fluctuations is discussed. A simple circuit control and the design procedure are offered. The time-shared instantaneous space-voltage vector PWM is inrtoduced as the control method for ZVS three phase AC/DC active power converter and its performance evaluations are illustrated using simulated results.

There is a continuing move in power provisioning for telecommunications to valve-regulated lead/acid (VRLA) batteries. Reductions in maintenance and an increasing need for distributed power have been key driving forces. The rapid extention of fibre optic networks is resulting in a wider distribution of power to a larger number of points in the system. This is creating a requirement for batteries with high levels of durability for a variety of applications that are often remote and highly dispersed. In order to enhance reliability an understanding of the special characteristics of VRLA batteries is required, and in this paper these factors are discussed to show how reliability can be assured. This is complemented by laboratory testing and field experience to validate battery designs. Consideration will also be given to the longer-term management of large in-service populations of VRLA batteries.

The table clearly shows that the DATALOGGER is a precision device. These technical data are attained by means of a 16 Bat-conversion system. In measured value recording the input signals are digital-filtered. This digital filtering makes cell voltage measurements on battery systems having a high level of fault contents possible (e.g. superimposed signals by means of a rectifier). This paper describes a new developed telecom rectifier. The device is fed by the usual mains voltage, has state of the art technology as well as high requirements especially for the efficiency. Also the suppression of interferences to the environment is of importance. This includes EMI and low harmonics on the line input current. All these conditions need a very careful design. A new method is used in order to get the best possible efficiency at nominal line voltage.
