Historians writing about the History of Venice have rarely dealt with or mentioned the year 1868: to trace this moment it is essential to make direct reference to the Gazzetta di Venezia of that same year. Another useful source is the diary of Elena Pesaro Maurogonato (1853-1876), daughter of Isacco Pesaro Maurogonato (1817-1892), a central figure in the Venetian Jewish community and an important political figure. Among the most important events are the celebrations in St. Mark’s Square on the occasion of the Carnival, the representations at the Teatro La Fenice and events related to the translation of Daniele Manin’s ashes. This essay also traces a portrait of the social situation in Venice, ranging from the identification of differences between social classes to the creation of the ‘myth of Venice’, a collective cultural identity resulting from the association of several popular traditions.

This essay aims to give a reading of Guglielmo Ciardi’s painting Canale della Giudecca focused on light and synthesis of pictorial elements. The second half of the 19th century is a very intense period for Venice: the Serenissima experience recently ended and modernity is arriving in the form of new bridges and ferries. The Academy of Art is living a big revolution and artists are travelling, learning new techniques and painting en plein air. Guglielmo Ciardi is in this way a man of his times and he gives a very good proof of it in this painting. Thanks to critical readings and secondary sources Ciardi’s creative process will be here analysed and explained with particular stress on light and synthesis. Therefore, Canale della Giudecca is interpreted here as a manifesto and a ‘photo-synthesis’ of the painter’s art, of the landscape painting changes and as a symbol of the 1868 venetian historical and cultural context.

This study deals with the situation of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 1868. Particular attention was given to the activities of the different ‘schools’ of the Institute, analysing both the statistical data and the programs prepared by professors. Two volumes published in 2016, edited by Nico Stringa, on the Academy of Fine Arts have been particularly valuable to reconstruct those topics, as well as the archival material present within the Academy itself. Finally, the points of continuity and discontinuity with the academic years of the first half of the 19th century were highlighted.

Photography in Venice around 1868 was going through a period of great vitality. Mapping the main photographic studios, located mainly around St. Mark Square, includes indeed about a hundred operators who create images in various formats, from the large ‘imperial’ to the small ‘visiting cards’ with all the suggestions allowed by the existing techniques, from monochrome imbibitions to printing on pre-colored paper to the romantic ‘moonlight’ effect. From Antonio Perini to Carlo Ponti to Carlo Naya, these professionals trace a new path to the creation of images, inventing new tools and leaving evidence of fascinating views of the city of Venice, such as the one that portrays the R. Scuola Superiore di Commercio.

At the end of the Austrian domination, the city of Venice lived in a critical situation characterized by an elevated rate of poverty and a dramatic lack of trades. In the years between 1866 and 1868, aiming to improve the Italian commercial activities and to restore the city to its former glory, a group of venetian delegations supported the establishment of a ‘Scuola superiore di commercio’ in Venice, that was officially founded in 1868. The School was realized in order to become a national and european model of high studies, educating students on the field of economics and commerce and introducing them at the careers as experts, consuls or professors. Through the articles published on the Gazzetta di Venezia in 1868, the essay retraces a complete report of the most important events and negotiations that brought to the opening of the School.
