Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the changes in alveolar bone height (ABH) and buccal bone thickness (BBT) of the maxillary teeth after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A total of 9 patients with preoperative and postoperative CBCT records were included in this study. All patients underwent SARME and all of them received a modified acrylic bonded appliance as a maxillary expander. CBCT images were taken before SARME (T1) and after a consolidation period of 3 to 4 months (T2). ABH was determined by measuring the distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar crest on CBCT images. To evaluate BBT, two different points were identified along the root surface. Results: Alveolar bone loss (ABL) detected between T1 and T2 ABH measurements was statistically significant at all sites of each tooth. There was a statistically significant decrease in BBT at all measured points of each tooth between the T1 and T2 measurements. Conclusion: SARME with modified acrylic-bonded appliances causes ABL and a decrease in BBT, which increases the risk of tooth loss and gingival recession.

Objective: Our study assesss the clinical features of oral lesions that require histological examination and patient-reported symptoms to estimate the risk of malignancy and to determine the presence of any altered features. Materials and Methods: Demographic characteristics of 70 patients and clinical features of lesions were analyzed using chi-square test, Fisher’s Exact test of Independence and discriminant function analysis. Results: Margins, lymphadenopathy, patient’s self-awareness of the lesion associated with mass effect, surface texture, colour, ulceration, loss of function and pain were significant parameters indicating the risk of malignancy (p<0.05). Analyses of the parameters related to the high risk of malignancy have led to a statistical model for clinical differentiation of benign lesions from malignancies with an accuracy of 91.4% (p=0.016). The statistical model demonstrated that the most important discriminative features were margins, surface texture, patient’s self-awareness, lymphadenopathy, loss of function, ulceration, colour, and pain, respectively. Conclusion: In our study, age, gender, duration and localization did not anticipate the nature of the lesion. Our statistical model showed that irregular/indistinct margins and surface textures and the presence of lymphadenopathy have a higher risk of malignancy.

Objective: The complete blood count parameters and biochemical biomarkers important for the follow-up of patients in the inflammatory process of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) inpatients in the ward, and intensive care were analysed retrospectively. Materials and Methods: One hundred thirty inpatients in the intensive care and 147 inpatients in the COVID-19 ward were included in this study. Additionally, 47 healthy people were added as a control group. Whole blood parameters [white blood cell (WBC), lymphocyte, monocytes, platelet, neutrophil, monocyte/ lymphocyte (MLR), neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR)], ferritin, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, erythrocyte sedimentation ratio (ESR) and albumin values of these patients and individuals were analyzed retrospectively. Obtained laboratory values were compared. Results: The procalcitonin, CRP, ESR, WBC, neutrophil, NLR, MLR, ferritin and procalcitonin values of the patients the intensive care patients were higher than the other two groups (p<0.001). However, the albumin and lymphocyte levels of the patients in the intensive care unit were lower (p<0.001). Additionally, the CRP and ESR values of the inpatients in the ward were higher than those in the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Hematological findings such as lymphocytes, NLR, WBC and inflammatory findings such as procalcitonin, ESR, CRP, and ferritin are associated with disease severity. Additionally, increased NLR levels may indicate aggravation of the inflammatory process and the possibility of intensive care admission. Therefore, monitoring of inflammatory findings, and NLR, can help predict and treat the prognosis of COVID-19.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of apelin (APL)-13 in a trinitrobenzenesulphonic acid (TNBS) induced experimental colitis model. It is also to test whether APL-13 has an antioxidant effect in addition to its proliferative and anti-inflammatory effect in colon inflammation by looking at antioxidant parameters. Materials and Methods: Forty-five Wistar albino rats were divided into six groups as control, sham control, APL control, colitis (TNBS), colitis + ethanol, and colitis + APL. The control group was fed a standard diet without any treatment. The sham group was treated in the same colitis group, but saline was given instead of TNBS. The APL control group was given APL, but no colitis was induced. Colitis + ethanol and colitis + APL group was given ethanol and 100 µg/kg APL intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 3 days after colitis. For the biochemical analysis of the tissues, levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione were measured. Histopathological observations occurred. Results: There were significantly increased MDA and MPO levels the animals that were grouped as TNBS and the antioxidant parameters were shown significantly decreased. Administration of APL-13 did make a significant decrease in colon MDA and MPO levels and antioxidant parameters were shown significantly increased compared to TNBS groups. The histological image of the TNBS + APL group was observed to have reduced mucosal damage, necrosis and edema compared with the TNBS group. Conclusion: In conclusion, our study showed that APL-13 has therapeutic effects on TNBS induced ulcerative colitis. APL-13 may be an effective substance that can be used to eliminate the negative effects of ulcerative colitis.

Labial adhesions are generally observed in the premenarchal and postmenopausal period. They are rarely seen in adulthood. Here, two labial fusion cases in the reproductive period are discussed. In the first case, 38-year-old virgin woman presented with anuria to the emergency unit. On her physical examination, labia were fused totally including periurethral area. His history revealed that she was mentally retarded and had primary amenorrhea. She had poor selfcare. On her genital examination, she had secondary sexual characteristics, including axially-pubic hair and breast development at Tanner stage-5. In her surgical treatment, the labia were overturned and a well-defined introitus was constituted. After the operation, topical estrogen prescribed. In second case, a forty-two year old woman with Behçet’s disease presented with dysuria and difficulty in voiding for about one month. Her obstetric examination revealed that she had two vaginal births. On pelvic examination, genital ulcer was determined on the labium. Besides, adhesion almost completely fused into the bilateral labia minora. For surgical treatment, manual separation technique was used under general anesthesia. After the operation, topical steroid was prescribed. Labial adhesions are observed, especially in the premenarchal period. However, they may be very rarely seen in the reproductive period due to local inflammation and circulating low estrogen levels. Topical estrogens, topical steroids, oral estrogen treatment, manual separation under anesthesia or without anesthesia, sharp or blunt dissection under anesthesia are alternative treatment methods. The success rates of these treatment methods exceed 90%. Besides, the recurrence rate varies between 4% and 20% with manual and sharp dissection methods.

Objective: To investigate the regenerative effects of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) in immortalized human keratinocyte cells (HaCaT) exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Materials and Methods: Epidermal cells were interacted with UVB rays. Then, treatment was applied to ADMSC mediums prepared in different concentrations. Cells that did not receive UVB light were included in the study as a control. Results: With the application of human adipose tissue mesenchymal stem cells to HaCaT cells with different concentrations of media prepared, cell viability increased in both cells that received UVB radiation and those that did not. It has been observed that the said increases are more pronounced, especially in cells that have received UVB rays, reaching the maximum value at 100%, which is the highest stem cell medium concentration. ADMSC medium also had an increasing effect on the migration of UVB (+) cells. In UVB (+) cells, decreased levels of myeloid cell leukemia 1 protein (Mcl-1) and
